A serious incident at an address in Sandown has seen the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance land in the middle of a residential area this morning (Friday). The distinctive yellow helicopter flew low over Perowne Way before touching down in an area of open grass near Stower Place at 10:40. Medics are responding to an emergency involving at least 1 female, who is thought to have sustained a head injury. Island Echo understands Police initially responded to the residential address at around 09:45, with 6 officers – and 2 detectives – now present.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has an ambulance crew, a critical care paramedic and an operational commander on scene supporting the air ambulance doctors. It’s the second call out to the Island of the morning for the life-saving air ambulance, based at Thruxton, following an earlier incident in Ventnor. UPDATE @ 11:23 – The air ambulance has lifted off from the scene in Sandown, flying the female casualty directly to Southampton General Hospital.
A second casualty – an elderly male – is being taken to hospital by land ambulance. The extent of the injuries sustained is unclear at this time. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has been approached for a statement UPDATE @ 13:51 – Police have confirmed that 2 people have sustained injuries, 1 of them seriously, following a domestic-related incident.
