Island schools should stay open the Isle of Wight Council has stressed — although they say the situation is ‘rapidly changing’.
Schools are being advised and updated daily by the Department for Education about the ongoing COVID-19 situation — which has claimed 10 lives and infected nearly 600 people in the UK.
Irish Prime Minister, Leo Vardkar, announced on Thursday that schools in Ireland will shut to help control the spread of the disease. However, Prime Minister Boris Johnson did not take such action following a COBRA meeting yesterday.
The Isle of Wight Council has said schools should continue to operate as normal as it follows national guidance. However, as the situation is ‘rapidly changing’, the council said if the advice from government is updated it will take the ‘required steps to implement that advice’.
The Department for Education has set up a coronavirus helpline to answer questions relating to education and children’s social care where staff, parents and young people can find answers. To phone the helpline, call 0800 046 8687.
Schools sent advice to Island parents about how to contain the germs in newsletters last week.

How awful, fancy spreading this in a news letter! Sorry, I know its serious but it amused me
I hear rumour that from Wednesday next week they will close, but only a rumour, so likely just a hopeful child, OR teacher.
Funny that..is it because when people self isolate they can make even more money from legitimate abscences…what a joke our council is !!!!! Ibet they get a hefty sick pay when they have days off…
Gatherings of over 500 not deemed as safe! How many people at all our secondary schools? Way more then 500 with staff. Not just 2hrs outside at a football match. 6 hrs closed in classrooms. My children tell me there are children that don’t use a tissue when they cough/sneeze etc, or wash their hands. Also at times there is not soap in the toilets and is often watered down.
Listen up council officials … at the end of the day if the government deems that schools will close – you will have to do as you are told for once and not have a closed meeting where you all sit and wrong your hands and make decisions based on what you all want !
