Lack of maintenance at the former ice rink in Ryde has led to the business behind Mermaid Gin withdrawing from major development plans, an Isle of Wight councillor has claimed. Councillor Michael Lilley asked a question at the Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet meeting last week as to what action the Isle of Wight Council has planned to take over what he called a ‘lack of maintenance’ on the Ryde seafront building. He said lack of maintenance was why Isle of Wight Distillery pulled out from the process to turn the building into an attraction and distillery hub. Last October it was revealed that the former ice rink would be transformed into a visitor attraction called the ‘Mermaid Centre’, as previously reported by Island Echo. When Isle of Wight Distillery withdrew its plans, it did not explain why and has not commented on Councillor Lilley’s suggestion that the condition of the building was to blame. Island Echo learnt several weeks ago that problems with air circulation vents on the roof were part of the problem.
