An 8-year-old boy has escaped injury following a crash in Ryde involving a vehicle suspected to have been stolen by a drink driver.
Earlier this afternoon (Sunday), emergency services were called to Warwick Street in central Ryde when a Mercedes-Benz collided with a garden wall.
Initial indications at the scene were that the driver had suffered a suspected medical episode at the wheel, possibly related to existing conditions.
However, further investigations have led to Police arresting a 36-year-old man on suspicion of drink driving. He has also been detained on suspicion of taking without consent.
Shockingly, Island Echo can reveal that a young boy was in the front passenger seat of the Mercedes when the crash occurred. Thankfully, he has been cleared of any injury by paramedics.
The driver remains under detention at St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
Warwick Street is due to re-open shortly following recovery of the vehicle. The recovery has been delayed due to safety checks relating a property’s gas supply, being carried out by SGN.

The island seems to have a speeding problem,
drink and drug driving problem too!
I would like to see more traffic police on the island.

The Military Road is an Autobahn with NO Law and Order.
Charge more income tax if required, make our Roads safe.
Did he take the car with the boy sat in it? That’s kidnapping too isn’t it?
