A graveyard in the middle of Ventnor has been cordoned off by Police tonight (Tuesday) as they investigate an alleged serious sexual assault in the town.
Officers have established a scene at St Catherine’s Church as investigations into the incident, which is alleged to have occurred in broad daylight earlier on this evening, get underway.
A number of Police cars responded into Ventnor shortly before 18:30.
Island Echo understands that a man has been arrested on suspicion of a serious sexual offence and has been taken to Newport Police Station for questioning, although Police are yet to confirm details of the incident.
Enquiries are being carried out in the local area.
Hampshire Constabulary have been approached for a statement.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a man has been arrested on suspicion of rape.
