Police have arrested an Isle of Wight man on suspicion of rape following an incident in broad daylight in Ventnor yesterday (Tuesday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, officers sealed off an area of the graveyard at St Catherine’s Church early yesterday evening as part of an investigation into a serious sexual assault against a woman.
It has been confirmed this morning that a 35-year-old man from Sandown has been arrested on suspicion of rape.
The incident is said to have occurred at around 17:30.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has told Island Echo:
“Officers are investigating following an incident which took place in the church yard on Church Street, Ventnor at around 5.30pm on Tuesday, 18 June.
“A 35-year-old man from Sandown has been arrested on suspicion of rape. He is currently in police custody.”
The woman is being supported by specialist officers at this time.
