Plans for a supermarket giant to move into the heart of Newport have been reinvigorated after posters were spotted in a shop window. Tesco could open its 6th store on the Island in Newport — moving into the former BrightHouse building on the corner of High Street and St James’ Street. Previously, Tesco had obtained permission to move into the former Laura Ashley store further down the High Street, opposite Central Stores. Despite first gaining the permission in 2022, plans have stalled as the supermarket looked to also take over the H.Samuel jewellery store, which is still trading. Plans have been now submitted by ROK Planning on behalf of Tesco to install signage on the BrightHouse building as well as air conditioning units and an access gate on St James’ Street. The shop premises, next to JD Sports, has been empty for 5 years since BrightHouse moved out in February 2019. A licensing application has also been submitted by the supermarket, seeking permission to sell alcohol there from 06:00 to midnight every day and to sell late night refreshments after 23:00. You can view the plans, 24/00197/ADV and 24/00198/FUL, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 15th March.

Look forward too seeing more drunks hanging around Newport then
Anyone know who is taking over Poundstretcher? Work been going on there too.
What about the games company that was supposed to be moving in there?
What happened to the Games company that was supposed supposed to be moving into the premises, or have I got the wrong building
Every little extra helps.
Brighthouse. The rent to buy scammer scum. I don’t generally like to see empty shops, but was certainly pleased when those scumbags left the high street.
Well hopefully the H Samuel staff can breathe easy, !!!!
Never thought it was fair to allow Tesco to oust them …
Big supermarket taking over in Newport, which will close a lot of other small traders. It shouldn’t be allowed
Can’t think of any small traders this will have any impact on, not like we have many small grocery shops any more!
