A number of drop-in sessions about proposals to increase the number of places at specialist schools on the Isle of Wight are to be held for local parents. It comes as the number of Island children needing an education, health and care plan (EHCP) has more than doubled in the last 9 years, increasing pressure for places in special schools and outside provision, the Isle of Wight Council has revealed. Last week the authority unveiled plans to use the former Studio School in East Cowes, to provide a ‘satellite’ site for St George’s School in Newport, creating an extra 20 places for pupils with autism or social, emotional and mental health conditions. It is also looking to double the provision at Greenmount Primary School, in Ryde, for autistic children, from 6 to 12. Now, parents, staff and the community can find out more at drop-in sessions held in the coming weeks. To hear more about the proposals for Greenmount Primary, a session is being held on Tuesday 19th March at the school on St Vincent’s Road, Ryde between 14:30 and 17:00. For the proposals for St George’s School, 2 sessions will be held: on Friday 15th March at the school in Newport, between 14:00 and 16:30 and the other will be on Friday 5th April between 10:00 and 11:30 at the Studio School site in East Cowes. Feedback from the sessions and any received through the public consultation — which runs until 19th April — will be considered. St George’s has said it is a really exciting opportunity for the school and it is very pleased to be part of the new development. The school currently has the capacity for 188 pupils aged 11 to 19 with complex learning difficulties, which could be bumped to 208 with the new provision in East Cowes. If the changes are approved the new places for pupils with special educational needs will be available from September 2024. It is part of the council’s bigger plan to create 150 new places for children with special educational needs across the Island in the next 2 years.

Stop labelling kids with all these designer illnesses and pumping them full of drugs (speed etc) which are banned in the U.S. and many other countries.
The reason why many children have grown in numbers allegedly requiring such school places is because the Government using OUR taxes pay more to both schools and the parents IF they have a titled‘condition’
Since instead of shame , as it used to be, admitting you had a child with such AND it became very lucrative for both schools from funding , and parents bestowed with hundreds extra a month in benefit it is hardly surprising
Add a disability car or free taxi rides to school and little imagination is needed to see why the increase in more mill stones on our council tax
B-d, we have moved a long way since the pointed Harry Potter style hat marked with a large ‘D’ as the wearer stood in the corner of the classroom.
But, not all for the better.
Whilst no child should be ostracised for lacking in intellect, neither should they be made to feel more important than those children who are not effected by behaviour issues. Mixing the two, hinders the normal children, and would be best to have one school to cater for the growing number of future dependants on society, and give them just the scant basic education, for it is all most will need. Their parents could use some of the extra funding they get, IF they wish to pay for a likely wasted private education if they see a distant spark of IQ.
Woah….f you…SHAME for having a disabled child?? WHAT? I’ll generously presume you have absolutely no idea that conditions such as autism are wide-ranging, genetic and quantifiable, hence the statement of needs. If you did know that, but said that anyway it’s YOU that needs shaming.
I don’t like labelling kids either but not for the same reason as you.
Every child has educational needs (EN) but we don’t call them EN Kids.
Every child has a need (or right) of education yes, but SOME children have additional needs due to a disability. We used to call them special needs, but those without a disability complained that they weren’t also considered special. They’re still complaining. Why I have no real idea. It’s like complaining you didn’t also get a sticker from the doctor for being brave cos you haven’t got the broken leg.
I will try patiently to educate you on this subject. Most of you will refuse to listen. A statement of needs takes years of educational and medical assessments. It’s not done because lazy child/mum says so. It means education cannot be accessed in the usual way. It could be wholly medical (kid in wheelchair), mental disability (wide range) autism (wide range, includes ADHD and anxiety disorders made worse by over-stimulation, eg, noise, chaos etc). ALL of these are manifest genetically and NO DOCTOR BELIEVES OTHERWISE, and why children that look to your eyes as ‘ok’ have statements of educational needs. It’s called equality.
This is the Isle of Wight karen. They don’t do education here because they are too stupid to learn. Do the assessments and you will find that they all have special educational needs. In reality, the “special” ones are those who can learn and want to learn. The rest can work the dodgems.

Yes, I agree with that. Rather proves the suspected waste of funds though…more bang for our buck from the SEN kids. If only it took just a free taxi or two to fix them….

Equality sadly cant be forced onto people as we are not all the same.
So, some children are wonderfully athletic, others not so, but we don’t end up spending a fortune is ‘individual, personal training’ for the less lithe to try to make them into something they are not.
Some children are great at signing, others sound like fog horns, we don’t waste thousands on training those with lesser talent to ‘attempt’ to emulate those with a natural talent.
So we should not waste hard to come by money on trying in vain to get those who clearly are messed up to hope they become ‘normal’ all that happens is they disrupt the normal children who, in honesty, will be keeping these sens, likely for their entire life.
