The number of Islanders aged 18 or over who were current smokers in 2022 decreased dramatically according to new data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The figures show that in 2022, 9.5% of adult Islanders were current smokers compared to the national average of 12.9%.
This is a significant decrease from 2021 when 13.1% of adult Islanders smoked – much closer to the then national average of 13.3%. Data was not available for 2020, but back in 2015, some 16.4% of adult Islanders were current smokers.
Nationally, 14.6% of men smoked compared with 11.2% of women, with the difference remaining consistent since records began in 2011.
While the number of smokers has fallen, the rise of vaping has been pronounced although data is not available on a local level.
However, nationally in 2022, 8.7% of survey respondents said that they were currently daily or occasional users of an e-cigarette with the figure rising to 15.5% for those aged between 16 and 24.
Females aged 16 to 24 reported a marked increase in vaping use jumping from 1.9% in 2021 to 6.7% in 2022.
You can read the full study on the ONS website.

But the number of Vapers on the island increases along with plastic waste that comes with vaping
Also the waste of lithium batteries
Smoking cigarettes has decreased, this is a good thing. But, vaping has replaced fags and all those people filling their lungs with vaping OIL. I don’t think they realise what they are putting into their lungs!
Vaping is more dangerous than smoking, especially if teenagers are Vaping
many have suffered life threatening injuries.
It is all on National News
Fake news. Show the proof, not some scaremongering hyped up click baiting news in the newspaper…
they do but they don,t care and are too stupid to stop.
Of course these headlines refer to tobacco, maybe there’s been a swing towards something errrr….a little more exotic.
I see so many kids under 16 vaping now days it saddens me and I wonder how we let things get this way.
Why those disposable vape are even allowed to be sold in this country is beyond me. I blame the government for that.
These statistics should also be taken with a pinch of salt because I know they never asked me and I bet they never asked you.
I saw 2 young lads along the seafront a few weeks ago
blowing Vape from 1 mouth to another.
People were stunned to see this by the looks on their faces.
What ever next
Better that than starting on cigarettes…. hopefully. Revisit the statistics in 30 years time… If it’s bad, news, it will be too late
The problem is that many of the Vapes look like items of stationary or sweets
Many of them look like sherbet dib dabs or highlighter felt pens.
It’s sad but the majority of Vapers or Smokers are the uneducated families.
Its 2023 any sensible educated persons would know by now that
Smoking and Vaping is bad for ones health.
“it saddens me and I wonder how we let things get this way”
unfortunately it has a lot to do with the CONservative ideology of
“anything is a good idea if it makes profit for the Rich”
& something has to be proven to have health consequences that are an imediate risk to that profit, to have any (CONservative) government intervention to stop it.
To be honest, I can’t understand why the Government hasn’t made weed legal and put VAT on that, they must be loosing a fortune.
Good plan. Legaise it then there’ll be enough money in the kitty to complete the cancelled HS2 route. Or maybe build and staff 20 new hospitals. Much better idea…
But vaping has sky rocketed including amongst our kids egged on by all the flavoured vapes pumped out by the irresponsible manufacturers. About time vapes were subjected to a high tax.
£12 a packet may be the reason ?
That is because the idiots are now Vaping and they are making up their
own dangerous concoctions, even school children who are under age to Vape
are Vaping.
Just look at them when driving by a group of them
It is like Vape City, does the so called Law not notice when they drive by
groups of teenagers.
Get the Bobbies back on the beat.
Believe it or not Vaping is more Dangerous than smoking.
Google it.
Smoking affects people over a large number of years,
vaping effects people much quicker.
‘Believe it or not Vaping is more Dangerous than smoking.’ Says who??? has the data/anaalysis been peer reviewed or is it just some backstreet journalism hype promoted by the tobacco companies whose revenues are foever dropping…
Then read this following a google search:-
https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/5-truths-you-need-to-know-about-vaping#:~:text=1%3A%20Vaping%20is%20less%20harmful,many%20of%20which%20are%20toxic.
ye right all gone to vaping now slowly killing themselves that way…watch in 10/20 years all the death and damage we will all pay for..
I think any smokers left on the Island all use Ryde Town club. Always standing out side puffing away.
Not smoking is one thing, but I don’t think people realize just how many negatives there are to using vapes, and how damaging they are to users. It’s a terrifying thought!! 🙁
The data from the ONS shows…nothing, absolutely nothing. I will base this theory on the fact that as a smoker i have not taken part in any survey and neither have the people i know who also smoke.
Tobacco sales can not be the reason for the figures or else they would also have the figures for the vast increase in vaping, which they do not. The real reason they won’t release the figures is because the fall in smoking has been taken over by the rise in vaping, and that is still smoking. No matter if you smoke a vape or a cigar or a cigarette, smoking is still smoking. Anyone who disagrees with that try smoking one of the above on an airplane and explain your way out of trouble.
