Police have arrested a 60-year-old man from Sandown on suspicion of murder after the body of a man believed to be in his 70s was found earlier this evening.
Police have erected a cordon in amongst the trees off the Byway SS18 between Lake and Shanklin. Here investigations are being conducted as detectives probe the suspicious death.
As first reported by Island Echo, officers descended on the area of Scotchells Brook Lane near Morrisons at around 17:15 this evening. A search was carried out in the vicinity and then around an hour later paramedics rushed to the scene.
Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed tonight that they received a report earlier this afternoon that a man believed to be in his 70s had been seriously assaulted. Officers located this man in an area of woodland in the Lake area and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The death is being treated as murder.
Formal identification has not yet taken place.
The arrested individual remains in police custody at this time.
Detective Chief Inspector Justin Torgout said:
“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding this death are in the very early stages at the moment, but we will be in a position to update with more information at a later stage, once further enquiries have taken place.
“We currently have someone in custody and are keen to establish the exact circumstances of this man’s death, so if you have any information that could assist us then please call us on 101.”
A mobile Police office has been set up at the scene as officers are expected to remain in attendance over the coming days. Byway SS18 is closed to pedestrians and vehicles.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 11:41 – Forensic tents have been erected at the scene of the suspicious death as investigations continue this morning.
Cordons surrounding an area of woodland have been extended and there is still a heavy Police presence in the area.
There has been no official update on the identity of the victim nor the accused, who remains in Police custody at this time.
