Islanders are being given 1 last chance to have their say on the proposed constituency boundaries for the Isle of Wight; which have been adjusted once again, before plans are submitted to Parliament next year.
The change to move the Island to a multi-constituency area will see it lose its crown as the largest Parliamentary constituency in the United Kingdom.
Upon the change at the time of the next General Election in 2025 – although it could be sooner – the Isle of Wight will be cut in half into 2 constituencies, Isle of Wight East and Isle of Wight West.
Along with this change, we will see 2 MPs sent to Parliament to fight on Island issues as opposed to just 1, current incumbent Bob Seely of the Conservative Party.
The new look map however looks a little different to the 1 submitted in October with East Cowes now destined to join the new constituency Isle of Wight West as opposed to East, whilst Ventnor, which was previously assigned to the West is now in the East section – due to its close ties and associations with Shanklin and Sandown.
If current plans are followed, there will be 20 wards throughout Isle of Wight East in towns like Ryde were there will be at least 3, Sandown and Shanklin where there will be 1 each and Ventnor were there will be at least 1.
Over on the other side, Isle of Wight West, there will be 1 less ward with 19 in total with there set to be 2 in East Cowes, 2 in Cowes and at least 3 in Newport.
In the report it is claimed that the West – East split was, on the whole, unanimously received, unlike the North South proposition made by Labour. It also states a major reason for doing so originally was not to split up Newport – the Island’s County Town.
After this final consultation has closed on 5th December, the Commission will analyse the responses and form its final recommendations. These will be submitted to Parliament by 1st July 2023.
Tim Bowden, Secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said:
“Today we are announcing the publication of our revised proposals. Last year we published our initial proposals for new constituency boundaries – our first go at what the map should look like. We are delighted with the huge number of comments from members of the public on our initial proposals, many which included valuable evidence about local communities.
The public are invited to view and comment on the new map at https://www.bcereviews.org.uk/ and have until 5th December 2022 to do so.
Stupid idea, we have 1 MP who is useless now, just imagine what it will be like with 2 useless MPs fighting over decisions. Leave it as it is and get rid of Seely.

Looks a bit like empire building to me. Can we really afford 2 MP’s – I think not – one hasn’t done much, 2 would be a disaster especially if they both don’t put the electorate before their party manifesto! Would also help if they were positive in decisions instead of hopping the fence all the time. We need people with the 2B’s one being a backbone, you can figure out the other!

Our current PM is a fully paid up member of the world economic forum (WEF). The WEF are the ones that created the phrase ‘the great reset’. They want to change the way money and ownership works. You will never own anything again. The central bank digital currency is the first step. With that they can dictate what you spend your money on. Seriously, look it up. It is really scary stuff.

If they remove Isle of Wight from Hampshire, then it might be a good idea. Would be nice if Isle of Wight was not part of Hampshire, then this Island would get more from the Government, instead of Hampshire giving some of it to Island !!
Then we might get a tunnel built and stop all this hassle we have from the Ferries that are ripping off tourists and Islanders. Why should FREE PEOPLE be under dictatorship as to when we can cross to mainland !!

Is anyone on this site prepared to put their political views to one side and say why they don’t believe that constituencies should be of roughly the same size, whilst allowing for special circumstance, like islands?
I think there should be roughly the same number of people in each constituency, but I would like to see a system where the number of MPs per party broadly follows the number of votes cast by the public. Our current first past the post system is anachronistic. From memory, didn’t UKIP get four million votes in one GE for which they got zero seats. The SNP’s sizeable presence in Parliament – over forty seats I think – from a million and a half votes. About thirteen million voted Conservative yet they get a massive majority – that was about a third of all the votes cast. Most people didn’t vote for them and that’s the case whoever wins a GE. Apologies if any of those figures aren’t quite right, but you get the gist.
2 MP’s… Really? Surely that would result in 2 people vying for limited funding for competing projects, including medical, educational and transport. If they ‘join forces’ to lobby ministers it might be useful but both will want the glory. Better to remain united
