Responding to criticism of national polling, Labour’s Emily Brothers has warned against the ‘dark arts’ of tactical voting. Earlier this week Island Echo reported that East Wight Primary campaigners were concerned that online tactical recommendations may be misleading voters. It has been said that tactical voting websites draw on national polling data with small local sample sizes, but voters in East Wight face the difficulty that website recommendations do not tally with local indicators. Responding to the dismissal of national polls by East Wight Primary’s Charity Garnett and Mobes O’Flynn, Labour candidate Emily has said:
“I offer voters across Isle of Wight East my dedication, local knowledge and significant national experience, bringing together island priorities with Labour’s 5 missions for change. “The polling is consistent, it is very close between Labour and Conservatives with other parties well behind. Those calling for tactical voting such as East Wight Primary have no credible alternative evidence to demonstrate anyone other than Labour can secure change for Isle of Wight East. Instead, they rely on opinion from their mates from a self-selected group which is unrepresentative of our wider community.”
Best for Britain is a group of academics, researchers and data analysts who bring their expertise to the debate. They set out the options for voters and have advised that the evidence points to Labour being the best placed progressive party to win in Isle of Wight East. Multi-Level Regression with Post Stratification (MRP) polling is the most sophisticated technique to estimate public opinion in small geographical areas using national surveys. The latest MRP poll on 15th June by Survation estimated: Labour 33.30%, Conservative 32.18%, Reform 19.73%, Green 12.72%, Others 1.34% and Liberal Democrats 0.73% vote shares. Emily continued:
“Local people are savvy and more intelligent than they are being given credit for by East Wight Primary. They can assess this data and conclude the direction for progressive change is with Labour, actively support my plan for our Island’s renewal or vote for their preferred party. “Tactical voting that goes against policy and the evidence base is an attempt to gamble with Islanders’ future, whereas making an active choice is democracy in action and because every vote counts. “It is important that voters make a choice about the policy agenda of each party, whether they want a positive change with Labour, more failure with the Conservatives or no hope of influencing anything with a fringe party. “As Labour’s representative I offer an ambitious program driven by the belief in our island’s potential. I seek the trust of local people for a plan based on stability, investment and reform. “I would like residents to assess my offer for change alongside the proposals of other political parties, rather than be enticed by the Dark Arts of tactical voting which risks getting the answer progressives supposedly don’t want. Please don’t gamble, make an active choice.”
But we don’t want a “best placed progressive party”, we want a party to take away Trans rights, immigrants rights, gay marriage and the ability for women to vote. We need right with parties like the Tories or Reform!

You don’t think for one second that women on this island will vote for someone that claims to be a female, yet was born male. We women are fed up with our spaces being invaded by men who would do us harm and now we have to put up with men who “identify” as women invading our spaces, putting us at risk and making us feel unsafe and frightened. Since when did common sense depart the human race and it become acceptable for men to be in a female dressing room, whilst females change or in female loos – totally unacceptable.
Women and Girls and by that I mean those that are born female should be entitled to keep female spaces and female sports for themselves and not have their hopes, dreams and safety trashed by men again.

MRP actually predicted the Brexit result correctly as leave with 50.6%. The only poll that predicted the correct result (You Gov predicted 52% remain and no one predicted a landslide).

The only “dark arts” in the voting system that I can see is FPTP, which almost guarantees an electoral win of one of the two largest parties. Their candidates were not even elected on a democratic basis by their local grass-roots constituents. The only way to get rid of a ruling mob these days is tactical voting. Sadly, Emily’s Party is not likely to get rid of our very undemocratic electoral system either.

Except that’s the problem – it isn’t the majority.
With our system the candidate that the majority actually voted against frequently gets elected, just because their opponents did even worse than they did.
The same goes for the government itself – the majority of governments going back decades had fewer than 40% of the overall vote.
Then again, would you rather be governed by people who actually know what they are doing or ones that happen to be good at winning popularity contests?

Aristotle enjoyed advanced forms of political engagement based on complexity and nuance, and would say it is a valid strategic approach I guess. Socrates was more interested in morality and highlighted you should vote based on true preference and lying in that matter would be against integrity of the democratic process itself.
On the other hand, the democratic process with FPTP that doesn’t enable you to compromise best outcome for your vote with your true preference is already less democratic than democracy should be so vote tactically if you wish…
But if your tactical vote goes to party that doesn’t bid to get rid of FPTP, are you even helping democracy?

I think as put on question time that a two party democracy is bad for choice Democracy. The Tories have ruined the British economy and making promises now that they could of done months ago. Unfortunately I think Labour have ruined their chances in the East Wight. They were slow out of the blocks when the election was announced and have selected the wrong candidate. They needed someone with a strong local background rather than a candidate that has previously run for MP in Sutton & Cheam. I’ve had my fill of career politicians with Bob Seely! We need someone to put the Island first. In the West Wight there is a clear choice between Richard Quigley and Bob Seely.
