A kite surfer in his 50s has tragically died after smashing into a cliff at Compton yesterday evening (Wednesday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, multiple emergency resources were mobilised to the scene off Military Road at around 17:00 following reports that a male had sustained serious injuries whilst kite surfing off the coast.
Despite the best efforts of everyone involved, the man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Southampton General Hospital.
The incident prompted a response from Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team, Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team, a Co-Responder, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Yarmouth RNLI.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has this morning (Thursday) said:
“We were called at 5.38pm to an incident involving a kite surfer.
“A man in his 50s was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital and was later pronounced dead.
“We are not treating the death as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner”.
