Ventnor businessman David Groocock has confirmed he is to stand in the forthcoming General Election as an independent candidate. David has this week launched his campaign in hopes of securing the Isle of Wight East seat, with a clear message that the Island’s roads need to keep moving – particularly in his home town. So far, David is the only confirmed independent candidate running in the election – although the final list of candidates won’t be confirmed until late on Friday afternoon. Over the years David has been the President of the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, and served 2 terms as the Chairman of Ventnor Hotel. He has run his guesthouse St Maur for over 40 years. You can find out more about David on isleofwight.vote. Other candidates standing for Isle of Wight East include Emily Brothers (Labour), Michael Lilley (Lib Dem), Vix Lowthion (Green), Sarah Morris (Reform) and Joe Robertson (Conservative).

Yet another vote-splitter. Beware: this can only help Robertson.
Another one hoping to get their hands in the till of public taxes. No candidate that I can find is talking about corruption in government. All the issues we have stems from a broken political system that allows insane levels of corruption. The tax dogging by the current PM is just tip of the iceburge.
Actually David is a thoroughly decent guy fighting to keep IOW businesses moving… a big shame to see these kind of comments…
These are really issues that should be addressed at a local council level rather than a national level. I can see that this is an attempt to highight the plight of Ventnor but he would be better off organising a pressure group in Ventnor and protesting regularly outside the council offices. Maybe he could also start a pressure group to help get rid of Island Roads because they are an unmitigated disaster who have let the island down badly. Island Roads are not fit for purpose and a huge drain on our council tax. They have to be replaced.
Island Roads are the biggest waste of money this Island as ever seen,
they spend more time in the vehicle, than out of it, hence Fcuk all
getting done.
Sack the useless B’stards
Politicians don’t help themselves with their action and all get tarred with the same brush, lots of rash promises that are generally never upheld.
Its no wonder that so many are bitter about the whole bunch
Nice guy or not, he must have money to throw away as most people have never heard of him, so they won’t vote for him.
Absolutely agree with you, easy for people who sit back and do nothing to criticise.
Safety comes first, island roads are a law unto themselves I’m afraid, but good luck.
I’m listening, what does David have to say about fixing the broken NHS, national security, polluted seawater, Ukraine, Gaza, higher education, (public) investment in industry, trade with Europe, immigration…
It hardly matters because even if he won (by some miracle), he would be a lone voice with zero impact. He is just raising awareness of the plight of Ventnor but doing it the wrong way.
I actually agree with this Independant candidate, and will most likely vote for him if this is for local government elections. However, seeing this is a general election, the priority must be who runs central government.
