It’s time to find a new publicly elected official to be Hampshire and the Isle of Wight’s Police and Crime Commissioner. You may have noticed a poll card posted through your letter box in the last few days inviting you to cast your vote for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner. Since 2021, the position has been filled by the Conservative’s Donna Jones, the former Portsmouth City Council leader and a Hampshire magistrate. Now the window is open for candidates to put their names forward to become the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner. So far, 2 candidates have said they will be standing for the role: the incumbent Donna Jones for the Conservatives and Becky Williams for Labour, a councillor on Rushmoor Borough Council. Other parties have yet to announce a candidate. An election will be held on Thursday 2nd May to find the next police and crime commissioner, who will be in office until 2028. The role of a police and crime commissioner is to act as the public’s voice of policing and hold the Chief Constable to account. They set the budget and priorities for the police force and provide strategic oversight to ensure progress is made. Anyone wanting to stand can get their nomination papers from the police area returning officer at the Civic Centre in Southampton. They must be returned before 16:00 on Friday 5th April. To stand, candidates have to pay £5,000 and the money must be cleared before the nomination is continued. The Police and Crime Commissioner is the only major election Islanders will have to vote for this May as the Isle of Wight Council local elections will take place next year.

what about a vote to disband the role – after all, this is a democracy and it should be an option.
I agree; it is a position that has never added value to the Police Service in any county. We were also not asked if we wanted it.
Ditch it and use the money saved to employ proper coppers on the beat; one’s with a big helmet.
I will only vote for a transgender police commissioner.
Yeah, and they’ll probably get abused or harassed 🙁
Alfie, I sense sarcasm.
One thing is for certain, jones will not be getting my vote!
useless!
Rubbish, She is the best one we’ve had!
Get rid of Jones, she is useless and a perpetual liar. Better still, get rid of the unnecessary role altogether.
Labour or Conservatives what an awful choice. At one time vastly different attitudes but now all woke political correct and useless. So don’t bother to vote for more of the same imo.
I don’t know how, but I will develope a means of blaming Island roads.
Whi actually manages Island Roads ?, an Idiot!.
Well so far there’s no one worth voting for especially if they are anything like Donna.
I wonder what happens to the staff of the Crime Commissioner. Last count I understand was about 17 persons !!
The staff continue to be employed by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and can go on to work for the next PCC whether it is a new person or the sameone returned for another term. The only person who would normally leave with an outgoing PCC is the Deputy PCC if there is one who is directly appointed by the PCC personally without competition.
Not needed, use the money to put Bobbies on the beat.
A Commissioners salary and expenses etc could pay for at least
4 Bobbies
She put another 30 on the Island. Please do try to talk sense!
What absolute rubbish.
No way can’t feed more
Pigs
After three terms of PCCs, there is certainly a case for reviewing whether the arrangement works and if it delivers value for money. But the Chief Constable has to have some oversight and this was no cheaper when it was provided by the Council’s Police and Crime Panel. I certainly question whether it is right for PCCs to have political affiliations. believe the role should b freee from party politics.
I’m very interested in trying to get this highly overpaid role for the workshy. Anybody got 5k they can donate or should I do a ‘go fund me’ appeal?
Unfortunately not worth voting my card went in the bin! Just another waste of our money just need more boots on the ground with the village police person back the power to give a clip round the ear back and some more traffic police job done and I don’t need a stupid salary.
Time for change .. the incumbent has to go .. just a continuous grandstanding & trumpet blowing for herself, lots of noise/but very little action, her and Seely The dynamic due .. there time is up .. time to go ..
If you don’t tell residents what you’ve done, they accuse you of doing nothing. If you do tell them what you’ve done
You get accused of ‘grandstanding’. Can’t win!
The trouble is she keeps lying about what she has “done”. No new police station in Cowes, just a back office open for one hour a week. No new traffic police officers, just two existing officers moved from the firearms team, loads of our money wasted on hairbrained schemes that are nothing to do with her remit, how long have you got?
5k!!! I wouldn’t waste my money or time. The police are ridiculous, can’t or won’t show up for important things like road traffic incidents or domestic abuse when you need them. Or if you wanted their help at the cop shop, always closed or unavailable but everyone else from the mainland and them show up on mass when it means they’re in the press and spotlight!
Why do candidates have to pay £5000?
JUST VOTE .. NO .. to the PCC, it’s a sham that delivers nothing.. just part time Police stations and invisible Police officers when you need them ..
Do either of them have an interest on/for the Island?
