Ryde Library is to be closed until Saturday morning (9th September) whilst pest controllers treat a flea infestation in the building.
Island Echo was alerted to the closure on Wednesday morning with the Isle of Wight Council fun facility forced to close its doors as a matter of public safety.
The incident has majorly affected the operations of the premises and has forced the closure of the premises on Wednesday and Friday as well as cancelling a cancer support-group meeting that was due to be held at the venue for the 1st time today (Thursday).
Fleas are most commonly found on household pets such as cats and dogs, however, they can also be found on most other warm-blooded mammals including humans. Although they do not spread disease, people may suffer allergic reactions to flea bite
The closure will last until Saturday morning with the building set to be fumigated in a bid to rid the building of the bugs and their eggs.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said:
“A local pest control company is due to attend Ryde Library tomorrow (Friday) to treat a reported flea infestation.
“Ryde library will reopen as usual on Saturday 9 September at 09:00. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Not the wrong type of concrete then?
There’s some disturbing and dirty people about.I once sat behind a family on a bus.And the hair lice were jumping from there heads all over the Place. Disgusting..
Does anyone remember the ‘Nit Nurse’ from the ’70s, Nurse Bier? If you had hair lice, you certainly wouldn’t after the way she inspected your hair. She was scary.
Small point, head lice will not go anywhere near dirty hair, only clean hair
good old Ryde getting more like a slum every day
I’ve heard of book worms but never book fleas was the great plague spread by fleas
When you cut costs and cut the cleaning budget you get things like this happen. Make sure you thank the Tories for their tax cuts and flea infested libraries, crumbling schools, no boarder guards, no police, no doctors.
Knew someone would blame the HORRIBLENASTYTORIES….
Hygiene is a personal problem not political
