Some of the worst flooding seen on the Isle of Wight in over 10 years has been captured on camera by Island Echo’s reporters and readers alike.
Overnight more than 60mm of rainfall was recorded in Ryde, with a total of 82.5mm over the past 24 hours. This has led to significant flooding across the Island, particularly in Ryde and Newport.
Flood warnings are now in place for Ryde, Newport, Gurnard and the Eastern Yar between Whitwell and Sandown.
Below are some of the images captured throughout the day – from the early hours through to now.

The heavy rain WAS NOT unexpected. The met Office have been warning of flooding for days. The flooding has been caused because of those responsible for clearing drains and gullies ect. neglecting doing so. Even the lighter rains over the past few days have caused shallow flooding due to the same problem. Screwed more and more council tax for less and less services. Let’s say it how it is and leave out the crap excuses by the authorities and it’s management responsible
Poor isle of wight council. People there want to sort them out. Get rid of the management there. You lot don’t have a responsible council and they can not say not enough money in pot, just bad house keeping. How many house on the island that pay 2000 notes how many business that pay rates how many car parking fines splashed out
Poor Poor Poor council decisions all the time. Cut wages inside as they not worthy of their wage
Very well said. And I found a call to the council today to ask what help was available was utterly pointless.
The guy driving the Astra van that got stranded in the middle of the flood on Wootton Bridge asked for it, on the live video, he drove at it like a total knob!
He is just like all Van drivers
Another great day for the IWC .. pure incompetence.. they will now suggest a consultation and throw ££££’s at consultants to tell us what we already know .. stop building on flood plains , maintain roads and drains .. and plan for future occurrences..
Newport and Ryde, and still they want more houses built in these two most heavily populated towns. Where are the green fields and drainage areas that would naturally cope. The latest abomination, St Georges Ghetto being the latest paved over green site, and STILL expanding.
Gotta pour more concrete for those parking spaces everywhere 😉 What are you, some war-on-cars ally? ;)))
Quite alarming pictures of the railway at Ryde Seafront. Looks like Southern Railway have a debris problem as well.
Top tip of the day, my grandad once said never buy a house at the bottom of a hill!
Unless its got a big hole next to it… !
Can anyone answer a simple question? Did Morton flood before houses were build on the area along side? If the answer is NO guess what the problem is-nowere for the water to go.
I got a answer no one cares
I don’t remembering it ever flooding in the 70’s & 80’s
So where are the fire brigade with pumps or council vehicles out draining excess water. Should have been ready like the gritters when it snows . Useless yet willing to put up council tax when it suits . This council is a waste of space.
Wonder who forgot to close the gates at Simeon Street park!!! Ooohooo wouldn’t want to be that person, numpty they knew we were in for torrential rain but, as per usual , unprepared and in bothered IW bloody council, utter rubbish!!! Poor people left devastated AGAIN!!!
Hosepipe Ban next week
How ironic that there’s all that water at Ryde Esplanade, literally a few feet away from the sea.
Anybody know if the hosepipe ban is still on?I need to water my plants in the garden. Please advise.
Reading these comments the answer seems simple.Everybody just buy a house at the top of a hill sorted.
You lot just love moaning – why don’t you get out there and help people out.
