An elderly woman has been charged with drink driving after she rolled her Mercedes onto its side on a country lane near Brading yesterday evening (Monday).
It was just before 18:30 that emergency services were called to Lower Road, Adgestone to reports of a female trapped inside her Mercedes-Benz A170, which had come to rest on its side.
Police, firefighters and paramedics all rushed to the scene, locating the woman and her vehicle on a narrow stretch of quiet road just a few hundred metres from the junction with The Mall.
The driver was helped from the vehicle and passed into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

However, it soon became clear to Police that something was amiss, resulting in a roadside breathalyser being carried out – which the driver failed.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that 71-year-old Lesley Ede, of Webster Way in Newchurch, has been charged with driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above the limit.
She will appear at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 28th November.

SHAME ON HER. BAN HER 4 lIFE
So ban an oldie drink driver who rolls her car for life beybo? So what about the thousands of younger people on the Island who regularly drink / drive? A lifetime ban for them too? That would be logical as a young person has decades more years to cause accidents and injure or kill innocent people.
Ban all drink drivers for life, it won’t be too
many more years before driverless vehicles
are in the UK
Then these Numpy p*ssheads can be driven to
a pub, get lashed and get driven back home safely,
[…] ELDERLY WOMAN CHARGED WITH DRINK DRIVING OVER COUNTRY LANE CRASH […]
what a sad bint..
Mandatory driving re-tests for the over 50s. We have to get these dangerous drivers off the road
Why are you using a pseudonym which is already in use?
And I suppose your the best driver ever, I’m 73 now and passed my test at 17 never had an accident or fine, how about you
Mandatory full re tests for ALL drivers every ten years…if anyone disagrees, then maybe they should retake the test..
I am suprised it hasn’t happened before she is a really poor driver.
If a person is 71 years of age and still drives under the influence
there are NO excuses.
BAN FOR LIFE
Drink driving kills innocent people
Webster Way Newchurch???
Parish Council aside, it’s Alverstone Garden Village.
It is also one of the wealthiest parts of the East Wight and she is driving a Mercedes.
She is 71.
Poor old lady on benefits should have spent her Winter Fuel Allowance on a Taxi!!!
On a more serious note. Has anyone actually ever had to pay for a late night taxi on the Isle of Wight? Cost me £68 for a taxi from Fishbourne to Shanklin at 0100 in the morning. Far more than the night out i’d just had.
Until we get a sensible night time transport options in the rural parts of the island, then we will continue to get idiots drink and drug driving on our roads, elderly and young.
And this does have an impact on the hospitality trade, as if the pub/restaurant isn’t local, and there is no handy designated driver or willing friend/family member to provide lifts, many on the Island (especially in rural areas) simply choose to stay at home to the detrement of the many pubs and restaurants on the island, especially as the ‘food delivery drivers’ are better value than Public transport and Taxis.
