The driver of a Transit van has been tasered by Police after crashing into a tree at Knighton this evening (Sunday).
Members of the public came across the Ford Transit tipper on Knighton Shute at just before 19:20.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident and paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were the first to arrive on scene.
However, when Police arrived just minutes later, the male driver of the van – who was still behind the wheel – became agitated and aggressive before running away dow n the dark lane.
Officers deployed taser to stop the man in his tracks before detaining him on the floor – all witnessed by Island Echo’s reporter.
The driver has now been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.
He has been assessed by paramedics and is being taken to St Mary’s Hospital flanked by 2 officers. Later, he is expected be taken to Newport Custody Suite.
UPDATE – Island Echo understands the vehicle collided with a wall and car ahead of the collision with the tree. Skid marks and mud can also be seen throughout Newchurch and Knighton, where the vehicle has collided with grass banks.
The van has now been recovered from the scene and emergency services have stood down.
UPDATE MONDAY – It has been confirmed that a 28-year-old man from East Sussex has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.
He remains in custody at this time.
