Plans are back on the table for an extra care housing development at the site of a former residential care home in Newport. It has been nearly 2 years since proposals came forward to demolish the derelict Polars on Staplers Road and replace it with houses, flats and bungalows. The Isle of Wight Council is now considering revised plans after changes were made to the design and layout of the buildings. The development has also been arranged so trees can be retained along the property boundary to preserve privacy for neighbours. The former care home, which until 2017 was run by Somerset Care, has been demolished in the last year with the site now vacant apart from some wooden logs. The overall scheme could see the company, Specialised Supported Housing, build 44 properties — 20 of which would provide homes for those requiring additional help and care to live independently. The other 24 properties would be sold on the open market. Island Roads has objected to the revised plans saying it does not address the highways concerns it has had about previous iterations of the scheme. The highways body said the internal road layout and the junction on to Staplers Road fail to provide adequate visibility or cater to the needs of all users. If the council approves it, Island Roads has suggested 8 conditions including improving the bus shelter, the production of a construction management plan and a layby built in the neighbouring Wallace Close. You can view the plans, 22/00918/FUL, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 9th April.

Why can’t this council plan anything properly and then get on with it. A plan should have been put in place BEFORE it closed, not 2 years afterwards. And then there is Frank James hospital ( OK the NHS not the council ) but a similar disgrace. Total incompetence.
We don’t need more houses built for the open market. What we need is another nursing home on this site to relieve the bed blocking at the hospital. Our hospital wouldn’t be under such pressure, or need to keep urging families to ‘pick up’ and ‘care for’ their elderly relatives, if all our other hospitals, Ryde, Frank James, Et al. hadn’t been closed.
Yes what an eye sore it is.
The Council have no responsibility toward the general public.
When they demolish a site, it should be completely cleared of debris and material and left tidy.
The grounds should be left in a visually acceptable way if they are doing nothing with it.
The Island is just so run down now.
This is a company set up from an investment standpoint to make money. Profit. Lots and lots of it. This is not a company which operates for the good of the people. None of them are these days. So…first defund the NHS so it’s gives it services away and sells the land for a loss. THEN, when need is at its highest because of lack of services up pops a company saying ‘we can do that for you….but it’s gonna cost. And question, if it’s gonna cost anyway WHY WE DIDN’T WE FUND WHAT WE ALREADY HAD? Because….profit. Every need now has a profit margin. The greater the need, the greater the profit.
Some wooden logs! They can’t be looking at the same site as I am, it’s a disgrace to live it like it is, the piles of rubble and concrete are now growing there own vegetation !
Sorry LEAVE not live!
