Another person has sadly died with coronavirus on the Isle of Wight bringing the total number of deaths locally to 7, it has been announced by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust this afternoon (Thursday).
A woman in her 80s, who had underlying health conditions, died at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport yesterday.
She is the 7th person to die with coronavirus COVID-19 since the pandemic reached the Island and the first female. All of the other deaths have involved males aged between 60-100. The first death at St Mary’s was recorded on 22nd March but was not announced until 28th March.
“Sadly, we can confirm that a woman who was being cared for at St Mary’s Hospital and had tested positive for COVID-19 has died.
“The woman was in her 80s and had underlying health conditions.
“Her family has been informed and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”
Official figures from Public Health England show that there are a total of 38 confirmed cases of coronavirus on the Isle of Wight as of 8th April – a number expected to increase later this afternoon.
As of today (Thursday), 9 people admitted to St Mary’s Hospital to have tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered and been discharged.
Nationally, the number of people who have tested positive for COVID-19 stands at 60,733. There have been 7,097 deaths across the country.
The British Army has been brought in to help reconfigure St Mary’s Hospital to create an additional 200 beds. Meanwhile, 4 refrigerated containers have brought over to act as a temporary mortuary, should the need arise. However, the number of new cases on the Island is not skyrocketing as could have been expected.

Sad news
If you are overweight slob, on benefits, needing a carer, have COPD, ADHD, deaf, Tourette’s, Autism, incontinent, mentally retarded very old etc. then do us a favour catch coronavirus and check out from society (die) thus freeing some capacity for more deserving cases. Come on! DON’T BE SELFISH!
If you are a Labour voter, then do us a favour and check out from society (die).
And take your anti-Semitism with you.
Thanks.

Did they die of Covid 19 or did they die of something else… Is Covid 19 actually killing people or is it actually underlying conditions and the normal amount of deaths per year?. All News and media reports say: Blah Blah has died and they tested positive for Covid 19 (perhaps we all show Covid virus in our tests because the Tests are not actually testing a Virus , where were these tests manufactured, What is in them , what is The test doing to show it is an actual virus and not something most of us carry all of the time along with other trace elements of virus,s in our bodies….No One is Saying They Died of Covid 19. Why isnt anyone actually saying such and such DIED of Covid 19?
What Theresa you are questioning the narrative? How dare you you rebel? The sheep people wont like that! Why? Because they are to dumb to think things through for them selfs, and have to be told what to do and think by the sheep dog. You have a valid point, but it will be brushed aside as some stupid conspiracy as such. No autopsies, so if anyone dies of anything, and they have been tested for covid 19,then its covid 19.
Scotland recorded 140 deaths linked to Corona, without actually testing them ,Nicola sturgeon said that yesterday on bbc news , I really don’t trust the figures , something fishy going on for sure
You ask, did they die of COVID 19 or did they die of something else? YES they died of Covid 19 if it effected other health problems…
You ask, if COVID 19 is killing people, YES! that’s why we are on a shutdown throughout the world and some businesses are collapsing.
You ask, where the tests are manufactured, who knows where most things that we take for granted are manufactured, however, from my understanding the UK Government are criticisied for a lack of tests, this is because they have responsibilitys too ensure tests are accurate, and the Government now know that the equipment used in some parts of the world are unreliable.
You can use the terms Bla Bla as much as you like, but this is real, this is a new virus that the world has never seen in recent decades, since the Spanish flu.
You seem like a denier, all I can ask of you, please except what is happening now and ask questions later..
Totally agree with you Theresa, I said in another post it’s all a bit suspicious. I’m guessing you’ve got thumbs down because your not a SHEEP!
Mt icke would be proud, almost word for word. Shame its not your words or opinions, just listening to someone else’s views
Teresa –
If your healthy then why not catch it (as a test case) and if you die we can tell you then for certain that it was Covid 19 that killed you!
More very sad news. As a shop worker can I just politely ask the public to please please please only shop when essential and not once or even twice a day. It is increasingly becoming more and more stressful and hard work to deal with the people who do not seem to understand the distancing rules. People are dying and we need to all help by being less selfish. Thanx and peace out. X
If you see them twice, in a day, tell them to go. Tell them to make a shopping list and read it!!
Emma b….there must be 99% of this Island who totally support your plea.
Sadly there is that little bit of a weird percentage who seem to feel it is unnecessary because it’s all a conspiracy or no big deal….or maybe even a hoax of some kind.
No matter your sincerity and every one of us who will take every care to ensure you won’t come to harm if we can help it there are those who will simply believe everything to be OTT.
They are very likely outsiders of the main society or quite plainly not right-thinking people but thankfully the majority of us are,Emma so please take heart in that your comment has had so many positive “thumbs up”!
You and everyone doing necessary jobs are truly appreciated and how would we all cope for supplies in every day living without you??….and that also applies to those who sit at the keyboard tapping away with their laughable ideas; probably after watching too much sci-fi or James Bond and the like!!
Is there anyway the echo could confirm where the unfortunates has come from? I know for a fact one had come from London with partner (still fighting for their life in ICU) to be in their second home.
The vast majority of holiday makers and second home owners are staying away. Don’t tar everyone with the same brush
At Mary’s are saying different!!! They say there isn’t this many?? Who’s lying to us?
Are they still contact tracing ?
And the rest,that’s why there not testing,so we don’t know real figs,on who,got it,had it,ect

What is your problem
Sadly it would appear we have another casualty of this awful virus, this time a female elderly lady.
The awful thing is that there will be many sceptics referring to the older age-bracket as being very likely probable deaths anyway because of “underlying health conditions” etc. which in truth could be highly understandable if the many tens of thousands throughout the globe of all ages and fitness from highly respected medical doctors and nurses, through to transport workers to even young children and everything in between and above those age groups were ALL cases of “underlying health conditions”.
Maybe there are those who are inwardly terrified at what is happening all around us who would cling to the idea that as the majority would seem to be in the older population in order to somehow believe it cannot and will not touch them, they cannot,WILL not face the dreadful truth of the devastation it is causing absolutely everywhere and still live in hope that it all will not have any impact on them personally…..believing that somehow all the rest of the World is pulling one great big hoax over the very small minority who choose to act like children covering their faces with a blanket after a nightmare to make it all go away and not be real.
How many would truly love that to be the facts?
It is NOT going to disappear any time soon and the more we accept that and continue to keep safely indoors as much as possible then the faster things will slowly return to some form of normality….if that makes sense?!
The tragic loss of amazing Doctors and Surgeons and nurses of many, many years dedication and expertise who have been caring for innocents and sceptics alike should make doubters really look at themselves and do a great big re-think.
There again,a lot simply just like to sit back and laugh at the stupidity they throw out there just to be bloody-minded and not part of the rest of the human race….just like those evil idiots today caught in Sainsburys in Lancashire, licking their hands then touching food, fridge door handles, meat and fresh food.
Then if one of THEM ends up in ICU……who will be risking their own lives to make sure they survive?
Downright evil, mindless excuses for human beings are among us; just be alert, everyone, when shopping.
House rules are very slack if you allowing comments on hope you die!
Despicable to all the hard working, though no fault of theirs to fall ill!
It will show no no respect to anyone as a contagious disease,
As you have no respect for anyone, you do not deserve any!
I am surprised that Island echo allows such horrible comments to be printed here. Disgusting!
