The Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team carried out a controlled explosion of a device in the West Wight yesterday (Tuesday).
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were alerted to the presence of the suspicious object near Golden Hill Country Park at around 08:20 yesterday morning.
It is understood that they stood guard until the Royal Navy unit arrived from Portsmouth at just before 17:00.
The object is thought to be some sort of canister or flare and was discovered by dog walkers.
According to a user on social media, a member of the public marked it with a stick and a green poo bag.
Island Echo is told that the device was detonated by means of a controlled explosion on the beach at Freshwater Bay.
The green poo bag probably had poo in it as most of them do hanging from trees and bushes
I advised the police of this at 8.20 yesterday morning and waited at Golden Hill Car Park until 9.15 until I phoned them again and was told it was not necessary to warn people about this and they would not send policemen until they had heard back from the bomb disposal people as to what it was as the police would not know what it was either. At that point I was told to stand away from it in case it exploded and to go home. I suggested a cordon might be a good idea and I believe this was erected later in the day. Thank goodness nobody touched it or was hurt by any explosion.

Looks like the handle of a fishing rod to me although I probably wouldn’t have picked it up to look if I’d come across it. Bit if fun for the bomb disposal squad I expect.
