With a recent ‘upsurge’ in COVID cases on the Isle of Wight, confusion has emerged over who is eligible for booster vaccinations.
A ‘spring booster’ programme was announced at the end of March and was set to run until the early summer, with 5million booster vaccines available to be dished out by the NHS.
Recent data from the health body shows more than 92,000 Islanders have had at least 3 doses of a COVID vaccine as officials hope a booster would strengthen our body’s response to the virus.
But just who is eligible and where can you get it? Here’s what the NHS and other government bodies have said…
How many Covid vaccinations have people had?
For many of those offered another booster dose, it will be their 4th jab — or 2nd booster. For those immunosuppressed, it may even be a 5th — a 3rd booster.
The majority of the adults who have so far taken up the vaccine offer have had 3 — with only 1 booster.
The booster programme was expanded to include anyone aged 18 and over in November 2021 in response to the emergence of the Omicron variant.
Who can have another?
The ‘spring dose’ of booster vaccinations is only available to certain groups, as determined by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). They are: adults over 75 years old; residents in a care home for older adults; and individuals aged 12 years and over who are immunosuppressed.
When can I have it?
It is advised a booster vaccine dose should be taken approximately 3 months after your last one.
Which vaccine will I be offered?
Eligible adults will be offered either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. Those under 18 and needing a booster will only be offered the Pfizer vaccine.
How do I book one?
You will only be able to book a 4th, or 5th, COVID vaccination if you have been invited by the NHS. To do so, either call 119, the NHS’s dedicated COVID line, or online through the National Booking System.
The NHS’s advice if you think you are eligible and have not been invited is to book a vaccination or find a walk-in site near you.
Where can I get a booster?
The main vaccination centre at the Riverside Centre, in Newport, is offering vaccination slots still although it has changed its opening times.
In July, the centre is now only open 08:00 to 20:00 on Fridays, for those aged 12+, and 09:00 to 18:00 on Sundays for those between 5 and 11.
Could future COVID booster vaccines be necessary?
The JCVI said in May that a further dose is likely to be advised for those who are at a higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
That could start from the Autumn but has yet to be officially confirmed, only interim advice has been published for operational planners in the NHS, care homes and wider community health settings.

This Covid nonsense has to stop!! My 76 year old father had Covid two weeks ago, the doctor said take a weeks coarse of paracetamol that’s all you can do?! Now, triple jabbed and everything. Enough is enough.
My 2 friends ,triple jabbed, have just nearly died from it and another said it was the worst she has ever felt ,so please don’t be flippant.
In Canada where most people are triple vaccinated, sadly more people are dying than the unvaccinated.
People really need to do their vaccine research, or read the Pfizer report.
So what’s that then? Pfizer is killing people now is it? Why only Canada?
So that is good right………????
OBVIOUSLY wish him well,
BUT could you please write something in which joe public can understand,
as most of us are a bit thick.
Not at all. We must keep the hysteria going…….. St Mary’s is doing their best to install fear, contrary to all advice and the law. Even the vets by Macdonalds still insist on full Covid hysteria practices, just to look at your pet. Fear is a good controller for the masses.
Havd you ever thought they might have vulnerable kids, elderly and personal reasons? They have to deal with you lot who don’t bother at all after all! I’d be wary as well if it was my business. When they all go off sick like a log of other establishments currently you’ll be moaning again about his lapse they are
Firstly, triple jabbed is good. The vaccine does not stop anyone catching COVID but certainly lessens the symptoms.
What did you expect your Father’s GP to prescribe him for COVID? It’s a virus, antibiotics are not prescribed for any virus, they don’t work. Paracetamol and drink plenty of water is the advice given on the NHS 119 helpline.
This COVID nonsense, as you put it, is still a worry for the elderly and medically vulnerable. Do some research if you don’t believe me!
I’m nowhere near your Father’s age, I’ve had COVID 3 times, including the 1st wave variant which was horrendous. COVID, even now makes you feel pretty crap when you get it and leaves you so tired for weeks after.

whats changed to justify such an increase in deaths – just a massive jab campaign that is all.
The reason there’s a booster for those who are triple jabbed and over 75 is exactly what you’re saying? If your dad had had his 4th jab he wouldn’t probably have got ill? What is the problem here? If it’s available then do it to be safe! They were the first to have their vaccines so they’re immunity has run low sooner than others it makes perfect sense?
If your dad had had his 4th jab he wouldn’t probably have got ill
…
Drivel – that jab doesn’t prevent illness, doesn’t prevent you catching it, doesn’t prevent transmission and has side effects.
I have not had any of these jabs and have had all variants so far. I now have naturally built immunity, which means any future virus of this kind is either dealt with immediately by my immune system, or I get very, very mild symptoms, only for a couple of days, without the risk of longer term side effects from a jab that has no long term safety data available.

Everyone is a bit dumb? Virus’s don’t just sit there stagnant, they change again and again it’s their job they’re intelligent and relentless survivors. Why does everyone think it’s not mutating to survive as we speak? We’ll always be up against it it’s not just gone away and ur won’t just yet either.
1in 25 bus have it and rising so if you’re eligible for your booster get it, it may save you from being really I’ll. if you’ve had three already you must’ve thought it would do something? You’re still here! If you’re old and vulnerable get the jab to be safe I’d say.
Who knows what this virus will turn into next? Nobody knows do they?

The most idiotic thing said over the last 2 years… I got covid and I’m thankful for the vaccines.
While without doubt vaccines have helped stop serious overflow in Hospitals etc brother in law worked on producing Covid vaccines he advised the fourth jab is a total waste of time for any age as it will not fight the newest variant it’s a totally different virus and takes no notice of the old vaccines…it has worked out how to evade it!so a fourth vaccine will do nobody any good!and Boris after he declared he had “won”his fight against Covid”cut funding again on vaccine production!profit before health people!
cant say that for sure – there is no way of knowing if a person who had a jab and then contracted a virus would have been fine without it. The symptoms they had after a jab may have been exactly the same, as if they hadn’t taken a jab.
