A man is being checked over by paramedics after a flat fire broke out in Bembridge earlier this morning (Friday), caused by clothing against a heater.
It was shortly before 05:45 that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a property fire on Walls Road in the village – literally metres from the now mothballed Bembridge Fire Station and in a flat below the scene of a previous fatal fire.
Crews from Ryde, Newport and Sandown arrived on scene to discover clothing a light in the ground floor property.
It’s been confirmed to Island Echo that it is thought the fire was started due to the items of clothing being rested up against a heater.
The occupier of the flat is currently being checked over by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, but is not expected to go to hospital.
UPDATE – The displaced male has been kindly accommodated by the nearby The Birdham hotel.
