EXCLUSIVE: Police are this week investigating the attempted robbery of a Cowes betting shop after a man stormed into the High Street branch and assaulted a female manager.
The shocking incident took place at Ladbrokes yesterday evening (Sunday), sparking Police to respond to the betting establishment and carry out a search of the town.
Island Echo understands a male suspect ran into the store before jumping over the counter and attempting to steal money from the cash tills. The unnamed male is understood to have then assaulted the on-duty manager, who defended herself.
Thankfully, the would-be robber made off without any money and the manager is said to be uninjured, but shaken.
Local residents have said Police officers were witnessed to be at the nearby Red Jet terminal, as well as patrolling the town. It is unknown if the suspect has been arrested.
UPDATE TUESDAY: A spokesperson for Ladbrokes has told Island Echo:
“We are working to support the staff and to provide police with as much evidence as we can”.
Detectives from Hampshire Constabulary are investigating the incident and officers are keen to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious around the shop at the time to contact Newport CID by calling 101. Information can also be given anonymously to the Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY: A 45-year-old Island man has been arrested by Police in connection with the attempted robbery, it has been confirmed.
