Supermarket giant ASDA have confirmed that they intend to begin building their first Isle of Wight store by the middle of next year, with the aim of opening the doors to thousands of eagerly awaiting Islanders in time for Spring 2017.
Before construction work on the actual store begins, St George’s Way between Shide and Newport will see major highway improvement works with a brand new two-lane roundabout installed, a spine road linking to Pan Lane and the widening of the carriageway. The Shide Road junction will also be signalised with traffic lights under the scheme, which has to be completed first as part of the planning conditions for the store.
Although no fixed date or work programme has yet been agreed, Island Echo understands work on the highway will begin within a matter of weeks and will progress throughout the coming months to allow the store construction to begin by the Spring, although this is subject to further confirmations and approvals by the Isle of Wight Council. It is then hoped the store will open within 12 months in Spring 2017 – less than 18 months away.
The new 45,000 sq ft store will include 400 car parking spaces, a petrol station likely to be offering the cheapest fuel on the Island, plus a café, electric car charging points and easy pedestrian access to Newport Town.
It was first announced in December 2010 that ASDA was to bring a store to the Isle of Wight, with hopes that it would open in 2012. Issues with planning permission, conditions and the finer details have delayed the project severely, however some £17.75 million has now been paid to the Isle of Wight Council by ASDA for the purchase of land next to St George’s Football stadium, meaning the project is ready to begin.
Councillor Shirley Smart, Executive Member for Regeneration, Economy and Public Transport, said:
“I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Asda to the Island. Their new presence will provide additional value to the Island’s retail offer, as well as creating new jobs for Islanders.
“I look forward to working with them and our wider community throughout the creation of the new store, leading up to its launch in 2017.”
Doug Wilson, Head of UK Property Communications for ASDA said:
“We are pleased to be moving forward with the new store, it has taken a long time and a lot of work with the Isle of Wight Council to get to this stage.
“The highways and roadworks for the roundabout and access to the site will be undertaken by the council, and will progress shortly. This extensive work will allow us to commence construction of the new store in mid-2016”.
ASDA will be located on St George’s Way next to Newport IW Football Club. The plan is included below…
