A total of 6 people have now sadly died with coronavirus on the Isle of Wight, it has been announced by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust this afternoon (Wednesday).
A man in his 80s, who had underlying health conditions, died at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport on Monday evening.
He is the 6th person to die with coronavirus COVID-19 since the pandemic reached the Island. The first death at St Mary’s was recorded on 22nd March, but was not announced until 28th March.
Alistair Flowerdew, Medical Director at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, has this afternoon said:
“Sadly, we can confirm that a man who was being cared for at St Mary’s Hospital and had tested positive for COVID-19 has died.
“The gentleman was in his 80s and had underlying health conditions.
“His family has been informed and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”
All 6 deaths on the Island have been men aged in their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
Official figures from Public Health England show that there are a total of 36 confirmed cases of coronavirus on the Isle of Wight as of 7th April – a number expected to increase later this afternoon (Wednesday). The total number of deaths locally now sits at 6.
Nationally, the number of people who have tested positive for COVID-19 stands at 55,242. There have been 6,159 deaths including 6 here on the Island.
As of today, 5 people admitted to St Mary’s Hospital who had tested positive for COVID-19 had recovered and been discharged.
The British Army has been brought in to help reconfigure St Mary’s Hospital to create an additional 200 beds. Meanwhile, 4 refrigerated containers have brought over to act as a temporary mortuary, should the need arise. However, the number of new cases on the Island is not skyrocketing as could have been expected.

I’d like to know how many ventilators we have in readiness
Not that many I dont think .but least they thought of getting us 3 old rusty refrigeration containers 1st
Noodles, well spotted x
Just—-“W-O-W”…did you genuinely post that for real? Unbelievable.
I would like to know how many people think their immune from COVID 19, and ignor the advice???…
i would like to know how many have had the virus, are clear of it, now have immunity to it and should not be subject to these staying indoors demands.
start testing for antibodies and start moving towards the normalisation of society and not remain in this never ending state of fear.
You could be immune, however you can still carry it & pass it on.
People who aren’t stupid probably. How many people do you know who have been struck down by this virus? No one. Exactly.
I’d like to know how many people are ignoring Government advice, and increasing the risk that could develop into a higher death rate.
Anyone can develop COVID 19, at any age….
Smell the coffee..
Another death blamed on this ‘virus’
I hope I’m wrong but I’m assuming from your comment that you are thinking that because this happens to be another older person then it cannot possibly relate…or is far less likely… to be because of the virus, therefore simply just an “excuse” on the records.
Sadly it is becoming all too obvious in this tragedy that age is proving to be rather less relevant than at first thought, though indeed much less statistically,it is true.
In truth there are countless 70’s,80’s and well beyond who are fit, healthy and vibrant people with a zest for living….there are reports of very elderly who have recovered who amazingly astound us just as there are reports of very young who succumb and shock us to the core.
EVERY human being is a person who has the desire and will to live and enjoy every moment given to them and it gives absolutely everyone great heart and encouragement to hear of the older generation among us who have had the dire experience of going through this pull through because then we know we all have hope.
We cannot dismiss anyone; we are all worth something on this Planet, even if it is simply because our grandchildren worship the ground we walk on,the knowledge and experience of years gone by,the love our children have for us.
Nobody..NOBODY…wants to be counted on this dreadful “another death blamed on the virus” or indeed anything else.
Let’s just do as we are advised and being asked…not ORDERED,hopefully not ever if we are wise…but using common sense and keeping away from each other because, ironically,we care about each other….be we 12 months old or 100 + !!!
Actually 2 days ago we were ‘instructed’ to stay indoors. The definition of instruct is, order. So without people really understanding we have actually been ‘ordered’ to stay indoors.
Well said , I couldn’t agree more .
If staying at home for a tiny proportion of an entire life will save lives then we must all do our bit , how much did others sacrifice for us for years to give us our lives & freedom .
Terri
I take it there are adults in the room that supervise you.
I take it you’re speaking from experience!
So sad …but us islanders are doing the best we can and we all recognise this as the island is so quiet atm ….keep it up folks and enjoy the fine weather at home
It’s nice to hear that the Island is at least quiet in some places then. Ryde is full of people, can’t get away from them. (See my other post in this thread.)
Wake up.
Think the only one here who needs to wake up is you, another person giving the Billy big b******s.
And so it goes on, more sad news. I expect there will be more and more as time goes on. I sincerely hope not, but I doubt hope alone will do much good. And still people are out in abundance as though nothing is happening.
I waited until nearly dark again yesterday to walk round the block, and constantly having to dodge people, one bloke coming sharp round a corner nearly bumped into me, lit cigarette sticking out of his mouth , almost touching my face if I had been a tiny bit closer it would have been, I had to try and move out of way quickly. Then three very large people coming towards me, taking up all the space on the pavement. I had to go and walk on the other side where there was no pavement. – No one ever walks out of the way for me, for some reason they just keep going as if I’m not there, it’s always me who has to move aside, and this particular nasty group of people started commenting and laughing at me because they saw me limp across the road to avoid them.
It’s bad enough having to dodge out of the way of regular people, but when it’s nasty sneering lowlife types, it is so stress inducing and alarming, common sense alone should have made them realise, that given the size of them, (they were what would be termed quite obese I suppose) and the fact that they were walking all next to each other in a close together group, that there would be no room on the pavement for me to walk past, but they didn’t even move to walk in single file, just kept coming towards me, luckily no traffic coming at that particular time so I was able to cross, but the whole act of walking for exercise is an endurance test in so many ways.
Englishe people eat to much fat. obese many are now in my land none so. sory you live in slobbery full up road mc donold now shut so less fat soon for you. lest no smok chimknee pot as hot for uk bad wether time year now.
i if you will coff a lot time the slobbery fats gang move in other way then.
my country men take out gang as such cut neck pipe if bully old and women and child hear men weak police no good to.
I cannot understand a word of what you are saying!
In English ????
Try walking from early morning to late afternoon when the zombies are sleeping
RIP
How many more have died at home or in care homes that haven’t been added to the figures from hospitals??
Still working all around the country cheers Boris at least I be home soon building hospitals and schools I wonder if I’ve got it or am I spreading it only time will tell
is it a feminist virus ? seems to victimise more males..
The trouble is that youngsters read that it’s only old men who are dying from covid 19 on the island.
I wonder really if it is to be considered “sad” when a seemingly normal person has passed after what we can only assume has been a wonderful experience on this earth. The fact that he was supposedly tested and proven positive for an as yet still unconfirmed “new virus” doesn’t mean that is what killed him. If you look carefully at the wording in the media it appears that it is what has killed him but it DOES NOT SAY HE DIED DIRECTLY BECAUSE OF CORONAVIRUS ! . check it for yourself !..There’s something very sinister going on right now and it’s got everyone s#*ting their pants. I believe that these people would have passed away regardless of weather or not they have tested positive for a virus. It’s so encouraging to see more and more people questioning what’s actually happening ! and to those with closed minds I say this… if you choose to believe the situation is as you’re told it is on main stream media that’s fine your ignorance won’t save you ! It will only add to your fear and anxiety. Just try to think for one moment ..hmmmm maybe I shouldn’t just accept this information because I’m told to…. you’ve got allllll day have a look around
meanwhile there does seem to be a noticeable absence of idiotic road crashes being reported – so maybe the feckless ‘can’t happen to me’ brigade are actually – staying at home????
Not in Ryde the’re not. Mindless morons chasing one another in their loud cars Quieter roads mean that they drive even faster in built up areas. Pathetic attention seekers
Well said! More people need to open their own minds to what is happening. Instead of just believing what the government/media want us to believe! The majority of people are SHEEP!
This will be so they can control everyone. Stick a dirty vaccine in everyone.
Wow! someone With a free mind, away from the sheep people, and challenging the sheep dog. It’s hard work my friend trying to get the sheep to think for them self. They don’t see the cliff that the sheep dog is going to drive them over, like me and you can. I’m with you all the way. And the sinister bit, agenda 21/2030, not a conspiracy as the sheep think. The government has a website with the details of the agenda, but most won’t look. The sheep dog has even told them about the cliff yet still they won’t believe it. Good luck. Watching with interest
