The COVID-19 vaccination programme is being rolled out across the Isle of Wight with incredible speed with the Island now having the highest vaccination rate across the Hampshire region.
In figures released today (Thursday), it has been revealed that 68,256 first doses and 2,040 second doses have been administered to Islanders. That means around 50% of the Island’s entire population has now been vaccinated – 56.9% of the 16+ population.
94% of those over the age of 60 have now built up some element of protection against the virus with 47,591 first doses given. 30% of those under the age of 60 are also protected – 20,655 people.
6,558 first doses have been given in past week (between 28th February and 7th March). However, the rollout of the second vaccine is yet to really get underway as only 26 people were given their second doses in the week ending 7th March, taking the total number to 2,040 second doses.
So far, 352 second doses have been given to the under 60s and 1,688 to those over 60.
It has been the national view to immunise as many people as possible with the first dose to protect people from the more severe symptoms of COVID-19 – an approach that appears to be working.
According to figures, 91.2% of those in older adult care homes on the Island, who are eligible to have had their first dose, have done. That number equates to 1,188 people. However, 88 residents have had COVID-19 in the last 28 days (prior to 7th March) so have been unable to have a vaccine.
In the older adult care home staff, 1,623 have had their first dose – or 76.4%. 275 staff members (13%) have been unable to have their vaccine due to having the virus in the previous 28 days, but that means that around 10% of care home staff, who are eligible, have not accepted their vaccine offer.

Fantastic they are doing an amazing job.
Still cannot understand why care home staff aren’t taking the vaccine, surely with the job they undertake they would want to keep the most vulnerable safe, and also their families and friends !!!!!!
Personally I think it should be made compulsory for everyone to have it no messing around no excuses this is peoples lives that are being put at risk I know theyll be a lot of thimbs down to this comment but its the only way to beat the Virus
Totally agree we all need to think about the bigger picture family friends colleagues and neighbours etc etc 2 refuse it is 100/00 Selfish as the Queen also said .
Man up and get the jab ASAP .
To force someone to do something they dont want to, just to make you feel better ,is really selfish!!
That’s your opinion , you may get it mildly ,or not even know asymptomatic, but I or someone else mabe very ill or die !!!!
The vaccine does offer a hope eg 80 pc after 1st jab and up 2 95 pc 2nd jab so we all need to ensure we are not selfish and protect everybody ,and when I worked in care albeit many years ago if this was the case I would be grateful and happy to protect those most vulnerable folk .
If you work in care NHS etc it’s your duty of care due diligence to get the vaccine .
Okay A Resident Hitler.Should the unvaccinated wear yellow stars too
no it is a personal choice and your body is yours and not the property of the state – you decide what goes in it.
99.98% survival rate globally – fact
1 in 3 asymptomatic – fact
vast majority of the rest -very few symptoms – fact
lockdowns are pointless.
And the world is flat is it lol
What if you had it and were asymptomatic then gave it to a close relative or friend who died. How would you feel then?
Yes and administer a complimentary enema to keep everybody regular but only once they have completed their compulsory eye test after they have satisfactorily passed their 2 yearly driving re-test.
Just had my Vaccine at the Riverside Centre just now they were Brilliant there didnt even feel her stick the needle in,,,,, Cant stress enough If your eligible get it done dont put it off
I want to know why my wife got a sticker from the fireman and i got nothing.
Perhaps the fireman wasn’t a member of the village people, or the YMCA…
Did you forget to do your hair?
Well done to everyone involved. Thanks for a fantastic effort.
Yes, get the vaccine. Looking forward to my turn. It’s the only way to have some protection from this horrible virus
On what basis are you making this claim. Please provide some facts to back up your statement
I can then go and speak with the 5 people i know personally who have had their lives cut short by it and find out why they are participating in this conspiracy you claim
Facts please????
They wont listen my friend, they follow the narrative, because the government tell them, then it must be true! If you trust government you dont know history!
Ah I see, virtually every country in the world and the EHO are following the government’s narrative. The mind does boggle.. about yours.
Rebel, given one of two choices, which do you think Boris would have preferred. Filling the news up about how great brexit is or filling the news up with how the UK death rate, due to his slow response, is one of the worst in the world. Your argument has no logic. Why on earth would they conspire to make themselves look so bad.
They have sold their soul and millions of lives for money
Unfortunately the echo took down the post that i replied to where the individual was claiming that Covid-19 did not exist therefore the response i put appears to be being taken out of context
Yes you’re right I think 68,000 people are going to be very ill and have an early death as so man already have that is not allowed to be reported in the mainstream media that most people only believe
But you are not giving facts that it does not exist. You need to look back at the original comment before giving an arbitory response
Are you insane ‘SRichards’? 23 Million in the UK have had the jab now. Where are all the dead and dying from it. To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people! I’ve worn jumpers with a higher IQ!
Time, time will tell! Let’s say have a review at xmas! And if the death rate goes up,well, lets blame it on a new variant shall we!? And of course give you a new vax, in lockdown again obviously!
Yes, it’s all good news. Just a shame you no longer get tea and biscuits like in the old days.
Glad I have had mine. Picking up some meds two days ago, helps me stay working. A young women with three kids walks into the chemists. Kids just being picked up from necessary (I asked her). she was not wearing a mask! Four covid spreading units thinking only about themselves in the one place where you will always run into someone who could have a very bad time if they caught covid. I told her what I thought and walked out, came back later for meds. Covid will put me in hospital, I can’t pay tax in hospital! I bet she went home and told everyone how terrible I was as they support her absolute self centeredness.
Good on her an awake person not brainwashed and believing the bs
Regardless of any alleged brainwashing, I think you have been brainwashed as the whole world can not be wrong. . Clean hands = good hygiene, face masks, do filter out a lot and space, I have never wanted to get close enough to smell someones breath.
I have to admit i was pretty sceptical at first that the island would manage the roll out of vaccination so well . Here I’m eating humble pie as near as dammit half the entire population of the island done . I even have mine this Monday coming.
I am going to have my vaccine tomorrow along with my son who has learning disabilities. Having the vaccine is my choice. Giving it to my son is to keep him safe. Please remember that this country is a democracy not a dictatorship and reason and understanding is better then force.
Oh those conspiracy fools, going on about the vax!, I’m mean what do they know eh?
