The number of coronavirus deaths on the Isle of Wight has sadly increased to 8, it has been announced by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust this afternoon (Friday).
The latest victim is said to be a man in his 50s, who had underlying health conditions. They died at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport on Thursday (9th April).
Today’s news is sadly becoming all too regular with 8 deaths now linked to coronavirus COVID-19 since the pandemic first reached the Island.
“Sadly, we can confirm that a man who was being cared for at St Mary’s Hospital and had tested positive for COVID-19 has died.
“The gentleman was in his 50s and had underlying health conditions.
“His family has been informed and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”
Official figures from Public Health England show that there are a total of 41 confirmed cases of coronavirus on the Isle of Wight as of 9th April – a number expected to increase later this afternoon.
As of Thursday, 9 people admitted to St Mary’s Hospital to have tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered and been discharged.
The British Army has been brought in to help reconfigure St Mary’s Hospital to create an additional 200 beds. Meanwhile, 4 refrigerated containers have brought over to act as a temporary mortuary, should the need arise. However, the number of new cases on the Island is not skyrocketing as could have been expected.

Thank goodness you are all doing a monumental job and we are very proud of you all
Thank you for all you are doing for us
So what are you doing right now Johnny? Are you indoors, not in your garden, self isolating and not going out anywhere even for shopping or your one days exercise? As it sounds like you may need to get out, even just the once…………
Off out shore fishing tonight with a couple friends and have a few beers.
You CANNOT catch it in your garden. You catch it from people not the open air THICKO.
if you gota small garden the virus don’t no not to drift over yur fence now do he? So small garden close to others is as bad as passin people on the street or shop or beach and park, virus still floats off people in close air.
What a pratt Johnny c is so if i sit in my garden and have my meal i will get the virus. It’s really strange you read about
morons that are on the island and at last we have found one we can put a name to. Welcome to the moron club Johnny
