UPDATED: Police, fire and ambulance crews are attending a road traffic collision on Sandy Lane in Shanklin this afternoon (Wednesday), where 1 person is trapped inside a vehicle.
2 fire appliances from Ryde and Shanklin are on scene between Whitecross Lane and Landguard Manor Road. They were alerted to the incident at around 15:35.
Police and paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have joined their colleagues in Shanklin and are attending to a woman who is said to be trapped inside her vehicle.
The road has been closed in both directions whilst emergency services deal with the incident in hand.
UPDATE @ 16:35 – Fire crews are working to free the woman from the driving position having stabilised her vehicle.
Traffic is being diverted locally via Download View. Motorists should avoid the area.
UPDATE @ 17:06 – The elderly woman has now been freed from her blue Hyundai and is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital. She is not thought to have sustained any serious injuries.
It has been confirmed to Island Echo that the Hyundai collided with a parked yellow Fiat 500, which has sustained damage to the rear axle.
It is thought that the weather may have played a part in the crash with reports of a heavy downpour in Shanklin around the time of the incident.
Recovery has been arranged and the road is expected to re-open in due course.
Emergency services are standing down from the incident.
UPDATE @ 17:20 – Sandy Lane has now re-opened in both directions.
