PHOTOS: WIGHTLINK AND COASTGUARD RESPOND TO MAYDAY ALERT OFF RYDE

UPDATED: Wightlink’s Wight Ryder II catamaran and St Faith car ferry are responding to a Mayday alert off Ryde this evening (Monday).

A kitesurfer has got into difficulty to the north of Ryde Harbour, prompting a Mayday alert to be issued.

The Captain and crew of Wightlink’s vessels are diverting to locate the casualty. Meanwhile, Ryde Inshore Rescue are mustering a crew and are preparing to launch.

Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team are keeping a watchful eye on the situation at North Walk having spotted the incident unfolding whilst on patrol.

UPDATE @ 17:40 – Ryde Inshore Rescue’s volunteer crew have now located and rescued the kitesurfer.

Thankfully, the middle-aged man has escaped any injury and is now back on dry land at Ryde Harbour. He has thanked the emergency services and Wightlink for their efforts.

Wightlink’s catamaran was within metres of the casualty and just 100m or so off the shore as the lifeboat arrived on scene, providing an unusual sight for onlookers on Ryde Esplanade. It is understood St Faith was preparing to launch a rescue boat also.
