Police have closed Watergate Road in Newport this morning (Tuesday) as a result of an incident involving a child and a car close to the local school.
The road has been closed in both directions as emergency services tend to those involved. Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are on scene.
The incident occurred sometime around 09:00 as school children were being dropped off at St George’s Special School.
It is understood that children are now being dropped off nearby and are accessing the school via another entrance for the time being.
UPDATE @ 09:48 – Initial reports suggested that a pedestrian had been hit a car, however, secondary information now suggests that a child has ‘fallen’ from a vehicle.
UPDATE @ 11:05 – A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that Police were called at 08:54 to reports that a teenage girl had suffered injuries along Watergate Road.
Officers attended but there was no criminal involvement and no collision had taken place.
The girl was treated by the ambulance service.
