At least 2 people have been injured as a result of a van mounting the pavement, ploughing into a bus and then crashing into 2 other vehicles on the main road at Wootton this afternoon (Friday).
Emergency services are on scene at Wootton Bridge, outside The Sloop, where the VW caddy van has destroyed the front near side of a Southern Vectis bus and has caused further damage to 2 cars.
Island Echo understands that the Caddy van managed to career down the pavement – on the inside of the bus – before emerging at the rear and into the path of a Peugeot 206 and a Peugeot 207 SW.
Medics are currently tending to 2 persons – 1 of which has sustained an apparent leg injury.
3 ambulance crews, an operational commander, 2 fire crews and multiple Police are all on scene and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is inbound.
The road is blocked in both directions but traffic is currently diverting through the Sloop car park. A full road closure is expected.
The severity of the injuries sustained is not yet known.
UPDATE @ 14:20 – The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has landed at Lakeside Park Hotel, with the HEMS crew now tending to a male – thought to be the driver of the van.
A second casualty, a female, is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance. She is conscious and breathing.
UPDATE @ 14:50 – Police are treating the incident as a medical emergency with no drink or drug offences identified.
The driver of the VW van is being taken to St Mary’s Hospital after being checked over by air ambulance doctors.
Energency teams are now standing down from the scene, including the air ambulance, although Police remain in attendance and road closures are in force.
The road is expected to reopen following recovery of the 4 vehicles involved in the crash.
UPDATE @ 18:40 – The road has now reopened in both directions.

Was this deliberate or an accident ? There is an awful lot on the Island presently.
Did you actually read the story?
It states “Police are treating the incident as a medical emergency with no drink or drug offences identified”
Let’s hope they never call you for jury duty
Must have happened within a minute of me reaching the back of a line of cars at Firestone Copse Road, down which I diverted, Some guy coming the other way was waving at the line of cars calling, ‘Bad accident.Turn around’, It was 1.45 pm. Sounds as if the van driver had a heart attack. I hope he made it.
I missed that piece of the report I must admit.
Yet it has to be said that not so long ago, any such incident would never had been doubted that it was anything other than an accident.
But was the medical emergency the cause of the accident or the consequence of the accident. It seems that you think it was the cause but you don’t know for sure
The medical emergency was the cause of the accident
Why don’t you and others read the post, that could have happened to anyone
Mate, the island thrives of car crashes. It’s like everyone one the island is obsessed with them.
I seen it all happen it was a bad accident, simple
Read the story numbnuts
Your a dumb ass
I think that with the road completely blocked and traffic being diverted around, there’s little chance of anyone ‘rubbernecking’
Perhaps all the emergency vehicles and traffic etc will alert motorists to the fact there’s an accident there. What a moronic comment.
The road is closed, no traffic going through. Ther is only one officer not wearing hi-viz and he is in the part of the road that is closed.
What part of “the road is blocked in both directions” did you not understand?
That’s because the road is closed and no traffic flow
If you read the article the road is shut in both directions so no vehicles coming through
The roads closed so no chance of getting hit by a rubber necking motorist
The road is closed in both directions ………
Not sure why people down voted you. They are dressed in black so harder to see.
“UPDATE @ 14:50 – Police are treating the incident as a medical emergency with no drink or drug offences identified.”
If you read the article it states medical episode for the driver off the van, maybe learn to read the whole thing before commenting?
Actually the article states no drink or drugs involved. But believed to be a medical emergency.
Why don’t ppl read the story b4 they write rubbish
Hit by what, the road is closed!
No Fred. Read the post again. It states the Police are treating the accident as a medical emergency. This implies the van driver was not drunk, drugged up or on his phone. Medical emergency.
Considering it states a ‘medical emergency’ I’m guessing an accident!
Another comment from someone that only reads the headline and nothing else.
Hope everyone involved make a speedy recovery /well done emergency teams involved
Typical people jumping to conclusions without knowing all the facts I just hope everyone involved have a speedy recovery
READ THE ARTICLE DING BAT
Fred again!
Surprised no nimby comments.
Read the words before posting such rubbish in future!
Some poor unfortunate had some acute issue!
This Fred idiot should not be allowed to post.
More bad driving on the IW
Why don’t you go and Phil your own mccaviity?
Is that the only comment that you can makwe?? I have seen that from you at least 5 times now. Getting very boring, and NOT at all funny.
You really are an idiot, someone had a medical issue and the best you can contribute is your usual blanket stupidity, grow up and move on.
Nothing to do with bad driving!
Thankfully there were no pedestrians on the pavement!
That’s why I hate driving on the road to Havenstreet up
to Northbrooke care home
People drive mad up that twisted road at speed and it so narrow.
Hope the van driver is ok must have been a relief for him no one was seriously hurt as this could happen to anyone
Blimey that was some crash into side of bus, I do hope the van driver is OK and the poor lady in the ambulance hasn’t been too distraught by the event.
it has been noted that I.O.W has the biggest accident rate in the UK
Clive, would love to know were you get this from as normally we do not even make it into the top 20 counties.
