UNDERGROWTH BLAZE BREAKS OUT IN ST LAWRENCE

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a significant undergrowth fire in St. Lawrence this afternoon (Wednesday).

2 fire appliances from Ryde, 2 from Newport, 1 from East Cowes and 1 from Shanklin along with 2 water carriers from Freshwater and Ventnor are currently on scene to tackle the blaze and to ascertain it’s full severity.

The Incident Command Unit from Newport and the Land Rover 4×4 from Ryde are also attending.

It is understood that the alert was raised by a vessel passing along the coast, which directed crews to the Old Park Road area of St. Lawrence.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to the Undercliff at just before 14:00.

UPDATE @ 15:15 – The Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service have confirmed that the fire began covering an area the size of approximately 50m x 50m, however, the fire is fast spreading uphill.

Residents close to the incident are being advised to stay inside and close their windows.

UPDATE @ 17:30 – Despite reports from a number of sources, it has been confirmed that no properties have been evacuated.

Officers from Hampshire Constabulary are on scene assisting the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

UPDATE @ 18:30 – 3 Fire appliances from Hampshire have been brought over to the island to standby at Newport and Ryde.

UPDATE @ 20:00 – The large-scale fire has now been brought under control, and Firefighters are starting to stand down from the incident.

3 fire appliances from Newport, Bembridge and Sandown remain at Old Park in St Lawrence to dampen down.

A spokesperson from the Isle of Wight Council has thanked residents.

Thank you for avoiding the area to allow the firefighters to concentrate on tackling the fire.

The cause is unknown as this time.
