THREE people were cut free by firefighters this morning after becoming trapped following a head-on collision on the outskirts of Newport.
The incident involving a silver Citroen Xsara Picasso, a blue Ford Ka and a blue Kia estate happened shortly after 09:30 on Whiterails Road near to Island attraction Butterfly World.
An elderly man from Newport, who was driving the Ford Ka, has sustained life threatening injuries and was cut free from his vehicle along with his front seat passenger, an elderly woman. Both were rushed to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance for treatment.
The driver of the Picasso, a 46-year-old woman from Newport, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to St Mary’s Hospital as a precaution.
Thankfully, the driver of the Kia estate, a 59-year-old woman from Wootton, was uninjured.
The road has been closed in both directions from the roundabout at Briddlesford Road (Wootton) to the junction of Blacklands Lane, next to the Isle of Wight Lavender Farm and is not expected to reopen until 16:00. The Route 9 bus is operating via Long Lane and Briddlesford Road.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact Sergeant Paul Bailey at Shanklin Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting Operation Tennison.
