A 14-year-old girl has suffered head injuries this afternoon after being hit by a car on a zebra crossing in Lake.

A green Renault Clio has collided directly with the pedestrian leaving substantial dents to the bonnet of the car. It appears the girl was using the zebra crossing at the time of the collision.

Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are currently attending the scene at the bottom of Lake Hill with the junction of the Fairway.

Traffic is being diverted by Police around the scene of the accident using the triangular junction, which is causing long tailbacks in all directions. Lake Hill is closed to all traffic heading in the Lake direction from Sandown, resulting in more delays throughout the Broadway and Avenue Road areas.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

UPDATE @ 16:40 – Ambulance crews have rushed the young female to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment, while officers continue their investigation into the collision.

Speaking to Island Echo, the father of the male Clio driver has stated that his son was not over the drink-drive limit and that the girl (who has been hit) had received a ‘knock to the head’.
