Emergency services were called when a taxi crashed into the corner of property in Lake in the early hours of this morning (Sunday).
A Ford Mondeo estate left the carriageway and ploughed into the corner of a bungalow on James Avenue – off Green Lane – shortly after 04:00. The occupant(s) fled the scene.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called in the interests of safety as it was discovered that a gas supply had been struck. Engineers from SGN were requested to attend the incident to make the scene safe.
Police also attended but were unable to locate the driver of the taxi.
It is understood that the vehicle had been stolen.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has told Island Echo:
“We were called at 4.15am following reports of a car which had collided with a house on James Avenue. The car was a Ford Mondeo.
“There was no one inside the car when officers arrived. There are no reports of any injuries.
“Enquiries are ongoing”.
