STRANGE NOISE AND ‘SMELL’ PROMPTS FIRE SERVICE CALL OUT IN RYDE

Firefighters are conducting an inspection of a housing estate in Ryde tonight (Thursday) as a result of alarmed residents reporting a strange hissing noise and a ‘smell’ in the air.

1 retained appliance from Ryde is currently on scene at Amherst Place off Marlborough Road.

At just gone 22:00, those living on the 100-property estate reported hearing an unusual hissing noise in the local vicinity, possibly coming from the nearby Trucast manufacturing site. Some residents also reported an unusual smell.

The incident has caused enough concern for 999 calls to be made to the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

The hissing has stopped and there is no obvious sign of danger.

Investigations continue.

UPDATE @ 22:50 – The fire service have now stood down from the incident. No action has been required.

It’s understood the noise was coming from compressors at Trucast.
