The pursuit of a van from Sandown to Newport came to a dramatic end last night (Wednesday) when Police used a stinger to deflate the vehicle’s tyres.
It was around 20:42 that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was alerted to reports of a suspected drink driver on Fort Street in Sandown.
Officers responded to the area and, at around 21:00, indicated for the driver of the red VW Transporter to stop, but he failed to do so. A pursuit ensued, which led officers halfway across the Isle of Wight.
Police were able to take up position with a stinger, which successfully deflated the van’s front left tyre – leaving it running on the steel rims.
The van turned onto the Bluebell Meadows estate on Godric Road at around 21:12, with the pursuit ending just a few minutes later on Wellesley Way.
The driver – a 34 year-old man from Sandown – was detained on suspicion of of dangerous driving, drink driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
A search of the van followed, but officers were given an unusual surprise when they opened up the side door to find a giant teddy bear staring back at them.
The suspect remains in custody at this time.
Anyone with CCTV or doorbell footage of the incident, which could be used to identify those involved, is asked to contact Police on 101, quoting 44260020938.

Oh well can’t blame us old drivers for this one then?
It is never the old drivers it is the young lawless Numpty
drivers.
One more Numpty off our roads.
Wrong again…
statistically, in the UK, the age range 40-49 has the highest proportion of Drink Drive arrests…
(but perhaps that’s ‘young’ to you ??)
40-49 are nippers.
Pure rubbish… more young drivers drug driving, no insurance, no mot…no tax, and drunk.. whilst using a mobile, no seat belts !!
Numpty, Numpty, Numpty – if they took that word out of the English language you’d be speechless!
I would convert to using Moron.
You’re a numpty
For Gods sake change the record. You and your bloody “Numpty’s”.
Ha ha that’s funny, you do know it’s not always older drivers, mostly total idiots just like this one!
Well done another lawless Numpty driver off our
roads.
We need more stingers to catch the lawless numpties
who think they are above the law.
Well done to the police, “That’s made my day”
That bear looks well-hammered. Good job, the Isle of Wight Police managed to stop the bear from causing any further concerns for other drivers.
Let’s hope the judiciary reads the police report and actually hands out a meaningful punishment.
Crushing the van would be a good start
Here Here. Crushing of the van should be an immediate
response, it might teach lawless numpties to not break
the law.
Some people are so passionate about their vehicles.
“All are a heap of metal that can easily be replaced”
i am hoping they pass the new law where if the driver is caught drink/drug driving more than once they are disqualified for life.
Good idea, but most of them are already driving without a licence, so that’s not going to stop them!
Here Here, no one should be given another chance.
It’s “Hear, hear”, you numpty
Unfortunately it won’t stop a great percentage, only have look at Islandecho.co.uk court reports to see how many are caught driving whilst disqualified by doing this they will no insurance, which opens up another can of worms.
However, getting caught over here has no deterrence with a ban being extended, crushing vehicles and prosecuting those who lend/sell them a vehicle might, only might, make them obey.
What a piece of shit hopefully heavy fine and banned but scum wont care back on road soon enough ..shame no jail but that’s all we can hope for.
Probably a Reformer/Brexiteer.
What makes me laugh they claim to be
staunch British, yet they drive
european vehicles, German to be exact.
Says alot about their British Bulldog spirit.
Buy Ford
Lol
Statistic in the U.K. are not relevant. We need the statistics for the Island.
Can I have the van to do up, make nice day vans or campers
Could auction it off to the highest bidder.
