UPDATED: Motorists and bus passengers are facing a 45 minute delay heading into Newport this morning (Thursday) due to temporary traffic lights set up for emergency roadworks.
Contractors have put temporary traffic lights in place outside Medina College on Fairlee Road to allow repairs to a burst water main, however the works are causing tailbacks past Binfield Corner.
In addition, out-of-sync temporary traffic lights on Staplers Road are causing further delays on the alternative route into Newport. Island Roads say Docklands Traffic Management (DTM) are en-route to resolve this problem.
Southern Vectis Routes 5 and 9 are delayed by around 40 minutes and the bus operator warn it may have a knock on effect to other routes.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area if at all possible.
UPDATE @ 10:42 – Delays are continuing on Fairlee Road this morning with traffic reported to be backed up to the Racecourse Roundabout. Readers are reporting a 90 minute travel time.
It is understood the temporary traffic lights will remain in place for at least the remainder of today.
Motorists are continuing to be advised to avoid the area if possible, however Staplers Road has cleared somewhat.
Anyone with comments or complaints about the roadworks and delays can contact Island Roads on 01983 822440 or via at [email protected].
UPDATE @ 15:30 – It has been confirmed that the temporary traffic lights are likely to remain in force on Fairlee Road until 16:00 tomorrow afternoon (Friday).
The lights are in place to allow repairs to a major 12 inch water main that burst ovenright.
