A former Isle of Wight copper, who has gone on to represent over 130,000 Police officers nationwide as the chairman of the Police Federation, has been suspended from duty over allegations of sexual misconduct.
It’s being reported by the national press that John Apter had his warrant card taken away by Hampshire Constabulary yesterday (Monday) as the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigate the shocking allegations against him, which were filled on Friday.
The Telegraph reports that Mr Apter is being investigated for 4 separate alleged incidents dating between October and December this year. The latest incident is alleged to have occurred at an awards ceremony earlier this month.
Mr Apter, who joined Hampshire Police in 1992, became a fed rep for Hampshire in 2001 before being appointed the national chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales in 2018. However, he announced earlier this year that he would not be standing for re-election in February 2022.
An IOPC spokesman has said:
“We can confirm that, on Friday, December 17, we received a referral relating to a police constable from Hampshire Constabulary and we have started an independent investigation.
“On Monday, December 20, the officer was served with a notice of investigation for potential breaches of police professional standards relating to four separate alleged incidents”.
John Apter’s Twitter account has been deactivated.

Correction,,,,,,allegations and not FACT
As an Isle of Wight tabloid please show some respect in the terminology that you use. The person in question is a former Isle of Wight police officer & not copper which is a term once used in Britain to mean “someone who captures”. The term Police Officer is a warranted law employee of a police force & is a respected position so should be used correctly instead of being abbreviated.
Stop using google and reading the first hit you get, you’re explanation is wrong and not why they are called coppers. Copper is used for slang in the UK because the first police officers wore copper badges.
You may be correct but my point was more about showing some respect for our police officers.
I can smell bacon…!
always one snowflake eh. people like you are the reason this country has gone to sh@T!
It’s called standards & respect of which you obviously do not have any as you feel you have the right to judge others when you now nothing about them, but Merry Christmas anyway.
It will be interesting to find out the outcome of this case. In the meantime it’s a case of wait and see. I personally find that if and I reiterate if he is found guilty then he deserves everything he gets.
he is not above the law
oh dear another one ,this is why the public have got no confidence in the Constabluary, maybe our extra money is to pay for independant enquiries , into any allegations.
Innocent until proven guilty. If he is found to be a pervert then lets give him the abuse that he rightly deserves. Until then presume nothing. Happy Christmas.
