Police, WightSAR and HM Coastguard are involved in the search for a missing woman in the Sandown, Lake and Shanklin areas tonight (Thursday).

Search and rescue resources are currently sweeping The Bay area in the hope of locating the indivdual, who Island Echo is told is an elderly lady with dementia.

WightSAR have taken up position at The Heights car park in Sandown alongside Police, with teams also sighted on Shanklin Esplanade. The volunteer search and rescue team were called out shortly before 19:40.

Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team are also involved in the search.

UPDATE @ 21:05 – The lady has been found safe and well and is in the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, it has been confirmed.

It is understood a member of the public located the missing woman, possibly in the Carisbrooke area of Newport.

Thank you to all those who go out on these searches for vulnerable individuals and often spend hours in cold dark conditions searching for that one person. Special thanks to those who volunteer their time, not always with the happy ending that this event has had. I’m so glad the lady was found safe. Thank you just doesn’t seem enough.
