A seal pup has taken a fancy to Shanklin Beach this afternoon (Tuesday), prompting a response from the RSPCA, HM Coastguard and British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

The youngster was discovered on the shoreline at Small Hope Beach at around lunchtime, with concerns raised about its health.

A representative from British Divers Marine Life Rescue and the RSPCA were called to the scene to assess the seal.

The decision has now been taken to take the mammal to a veterinary practice as swelling can be seen and there is evidence of dehydration. It is expected to be transferred to the mainland later on.

Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked to the scene.
