13 master swimmers from Ryde Swimming Club took to the water at the weekend for the annual Marlins Swim Club Pier to Pier race, tackling the 1.8-mile course between Sandown and Shanklin on a sunny but windy day.
The event, which starts at Sandown Pier and finishes where Shanklin Pier once stood, attracted over 150 competitors from both the Isle of Wight and the mainland. Safety cover was provided by beach lifeguards and lifeboat crews.
Ryde enjoyed double age group success, with Izzie Foster winning the ladies’ 18-20 category and her brother Ollie taking victory in the men’s 21-29 category.
Matthew Sussmes was the fastest Ryde Master swimmer, finishing 9th overall, followed closely by Jason Jefford in 15th. The remaining Ryde Masters were not far behind, including coach and swim teacher Mark Foster, who completed the course swimming breaststroke.
Organisers described the event as a great day at a great location, with strong performances from all competitors.

Time to rebuild Shanklin pier, Shanklin is not
the same without the pier.
