RYDE DRUG DEALER WHO PROFITED THOUSANDS JAILED FOR 8 YEARS

An Isle of Wight drug dealer who ‘boasted’ about profiting thousands of pounds by selling cocaine has been jailed for 8 years this week.

Matthew Read, of West Hill Road in Ryde, was arrested by officers back on 6th October 2017 after he crashed his Mini Cooper into a parked car in Collingwood Road, Shanklin. The 29-year-old had earlier been spotted driving at speed through Lake, but failed to stop for officers who tried to pull him over.

Read was arrested a short while later along with his passenger, 32-year-old Patrick Rice of Pier Street in Ventnor.

Newport Crown Court this week heard that when officers arrested the pair, a Stanley knife fell from Rice’s shorts, and a second larger knife was found inside Read’s car.

Investigating officer DC Iain Robertson said:

“Arresting officers located a quantity of pills in Read’s possession.

“During the subsequent police investigation we found evidence on Read’s phone that he had been heavily involved in the supply of cocaine on the Island since November 2016.

“The quantities mentioned ranged from a kilo to multiple ounces, along with messages boasting that every few days he was profiting somewhere in the region of £1,400 – £2,500, and had £40,000 available to him to buy more drugs.”

Following a four day trial, Read was convicted yesterday (Thursday 7th November) of dangerous driving, possession of a bladed article, possession with intent to supply a class C drug, and being concerned in the supply of cocaine. He has been jailed for a total of 8 years and has been banned from driving for 7 years.

Patrick Rice was convicted of possession of an offensive weapon and was handed a 7-month sentence, suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work.

DC Robertson added:

“We do not tolerate the supply of illegal drugs, and I hope Read’s sentence reassures the public that we will do our utmost to dismantle drug networks affecting our Island communities.”

yet another plastic gangsta that clearly thought he was on track to be the next pablo escobar. He ensured that his own fate was sealed by bragging about his exploits via text messages. Not the brightest, nor the sharpest.

There will still be Dealers who claim to be untouchable, but hopefully there is intelligence being gathered to give them a nice long jail term.. I just wonder how clued up the Police are with Dealers on the higher levels…. those with an IQ who try to cover their tracks with ‘legitimate’ businesses? They certainly exist but would take more resources than I suspect are available these days. Good start though.

Serves him right; shouldn’t have bragged. Someone probably tipped off the police! Hope that money is going to be took off him! BUT i expect when he comes out he will start again! He won’t want to be without that sort of money! He won’t like signing on and certainly won’t work! But go and deal your drugs somewhere else not here!!

@theresa…

yep – someone definitely informed on him.

You go around bragging that you have tens of thousands of pounds available to you, when you do not work and do not pay taxes and see what your neighbours and your “junkie customers” think and do.

The police pay registered informants (leicester police paid out over £100k in two years to informants) for info and most of these are gonna be junkies, who will happily turn someone in for a few quid for their next hit. Especially if the dealer has p**sed them off by not letting them have any drugs, because they are skint and haven’t got their benefit payment yet.
