Police have closed a road on the outskirts of Ryde this morning (Friday) following a multi-vehicle shunt involving a tractor and trailer.
The incident, which occurred at around 09:00, has resulted in the closure of Stroudwood Road near to Upton roundabout.
A small van has been wedged under the rear of a trailer carrying hay, towed by a tractor.
At least 2 other vehicles have been involved in the shunt.
Thankfully, no one has been trapped or seriously injured in the crash.
Southern Vectis Route 37 buses are on diversion whilst the vehicles are recovered.
UPDATE @ 11:10 – Island Echo understands that the trailer became detached from the tractor unit.

Looks like tractor trailer is not road worthy no tail lights or brake lights and no number plate
How can you tell it has no number plate? There’s a Van in the way!
me thinks you’re just making it up
… & anyway, how would having a number plate have contributed to preventing the accident ?
Oh you don’t think the vehicles following were maybe too close then?
I had a moron driving that close to me yesterday, and I was breaking the law, doing 45 in 40.
Get your facts right the trailer detached from the tractor and rolled down the hill
Where does it say that ?
Rolled down the hill ? where did it say that ?
it’s interesting how people invent ‘facts’ to embellish their interpretation of the reported situation
Maybe you should speak to someone involved mate, I’m sat with one right now. The trailer came off and rolled back down hill. Tractor driver is liable I’m afraid.
I didn’t say it didn’t roll down the hill, just that it wasn’t in the article & the poster ‘assumed’ that it had…
someone else who doesn’t actually read what’s written before commenting ?
That’s an odd way of apologising Daemy. 🙂 Why did you have to say anything, you knew nothing like most who posted…… unlike concerned Mother. 🙂
Anyway as interesting as this is I have a life and this is boring. Best of luck mate try not to make yourself look silly too much.
The publisher changed the story mid-morning
UPDATE @ 11:10 – Island Echo understands that the trailer became detached from the tractor unit.
It’s interesting how People/ island echo invent facts!
The tow hitch connected to the tractor Snapped, rolled backwards down the hill I to the van, the van then wen back into another car, which went into another car! Lucky the next car didn’t get damaged. So they were able to direct traffic till the police came!
The guys in the van were lucky they were closer than further as if this FULLY LOADED! Trailer built up momentum it could have been worse.
Island echo then call it a shunt and automatically everyone thinks driving to fast driving to close!!
Just because it’s written in and paper/on a webpage doesn’t make it real!! The guy from island echo wasn’t there when it happened!! IF he was ever there at all!!!
Don’t believe everything you read!
Actually the fourth car your talking about was damaged and was written off as my son was in it and your right it could’ve been a lot worse so before any of you pass a comment that you know nothing about as Ben has stated maybe you should talk to someone who was there.
By the way the tractor driver wasn’t a young lad it was a grown man who should’ve known better!!!!! End of rant
FOGGY ……..Thats a real responsable thing to say Speeding and you comment on every accident on here Lets hope its not you in an accident hurting innocent ppl When you are the 1st to blame others Lets hope you get caught speeding as the speed is a target Id rather take 10mins longer then drive like a w anker and get to my destination without putting myself or anyone in unnecessary danger
Get a life
Who me? Im not on here condoning speeding saying in black and white u was doing 45 in a 40 miles area Ur the one who maybe needs to get a life Just hope no1 gets hurt in the mean time FOGGY!!!
Stop shouting
Everyday I see all these tractors flying around been driven by teenage lunatics and very conveniently the trailers carry a different numberplate to the tractor and again never any proper working lights. I saw on forest road one of those tractors had a mud or something smudged over the numberplate that sits at the top rear of the cab and it was unreadable and it seem a common trait. I think the police would have a field day (sorry the pun) stopping slot of these tractors.
Derek, those teenagers are all in their 20’s and work very bloody hard!
The trailer plates do not have to match the tractor plates.
Drivers follow far to close to the vehicle in front. I stick to the speed limits always, morons behind don’t like that.
We live in a farming community. Get use to it.
Well said red, yes we do live in farming community
Tractors have as much right to be on the road as anyone else!!
Yes I agree but at the same time abide by the rules. I personally don’t have a problem with them. like any other vehicles on the road the car tractor lorry bus etc.. its an inanimate object it’s down to the driver and the way they drive the said vehicle and am sorry I can’t count the amount of times I’ve seen other cars buses lorry’s been forced off the road etc because the driver of the tractor is DRIVING IT LIKE THEY STOLE IT!! and as I’ve said before you can’t report them because 99% of the time conveniently the numberplate of the trailor either doesn’t match the tractor or the tractors numberplate is smeared with mud(by hand) or no number plate or lights etc and that my friend is the difference.
Tractor hitch was worn trailer rolled into van luckyvan was there, could have been much worse rubbish should not have been on the road,.
And if people want titanium trailers with maximum safety, they better be prepared to pay for it when the costs are passed down the chain. Cheap equipment = cheap food.
That is true. The supermarkets are screwing the farmers out of business. Mind you being tight on cash does not all anyone to drive dangerous vehicles on the road. Seen tractors on the island roads at night with no lights but a barely flashing amber light hanging to one side. With a stretched police force you’ll get people in all works of life taking risks. Next time you’re walking down the road just look at the tyres of the cars and vans. You’ll be surprised how many are illegal and dangerous in the wet.
The largest ‘con’ is this bio mass thing at Arreton. The huge number of massive tractors and trailers on the road, causing large tail back, lugging cut vegetation to convert into ‘green energy’ is a joke’
All those drivers wages, the huge cost of the tractors, trailers, and machinery, the pollution caused NOT ONLY by these large tractors taking the ‘green cuttings’ to the bio-mass, but also the huge tail backs of slow vehicles stuck behind these manic drivers.
The skid marks on the Islands narrow roads where these tractors have had near misses, can only be matched by the corresponding skid marks in the elderly Island drivers undies as they meet face on a huge tractor, driving at dangerous speeds on country lanes.
I have heard as the UK is to leave (we hope) the EU, that the Germans are now owners of this bio-mass machinery so as they can keep receiving EU ‘subsidises’ for the clearly inefficient running of such.
Unsure if the latter is true, but the rest of the whole sorry con appears to be
I think you will find a lot of skid marks are from the trailer braking system when empty lock up very easy at a very low speed!!
It’s no way tractors going to fast.
I suggest you do some research mate !!!!
The straw on the trailer was for horses!
Does it really matter what was on the trailer and what is was for!!
I mean really!!
Dear westwighter if you read all the comments you would see that it is imimpiled that pressure from super markets is why this tractor was on the road, and not the fact that it was driven by a incopatiant p— k
A bit of maintenance is all that is needed not titanium : straw on trailer was for horse bedding not food chain!
More bad driving on the I o w
Talking out of your cavity again Phil
How is that bad driving, you brain dead moron.
I didn’t say the van was driving too close, I said someone was driving that close to me yesterday, actually my speedo registered 45 true speed probably 42.5 . My point is if I slam my breaks on coz a squirrel runs out on me, the car behind will ram me up the derrière. I do not comment on every car accident article.
The point of the artical was a tractor and an accident Not about how fast your driving Who ever said you coment on every story must be bored of you as well
Foggy …..The point of the artical was a tractor trailor Not how fast you was driving 40 is the target not lets go a bit over Id love to know who said you comment on all accidents Maybe there bored of ur pointless comments
Suprised some of you can use a keyboard with those webby mitts.
My eyes are sore from reading the spelling on here.
HAY!! . …. be careful………..
