Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team have responded to reports of an upturned kayak in Sandown Bay this afternoon (Thursday).

The alarm was raised at around 14:10 when Solent Coastguard received an emergency call from a concerned member of the public.

Sandown’s inshore lifeboat was tasked to launch to not only recover the kayak, but to also ensure no persons were in difficulty. Coastguard Officers from Bembridge were also tasked to the incident.

However, before the lifeboat could launch the kayak washed in and the volunteer crew were able to pluck it out of the water.

No one is thought to be in peril on the sea in what are truly rough conditions today. The kayak is known locally.

HM Coastguard are advising that Islanders ensure all dinghys, kayaks and other similar items are stowed securely as we enter the winter period.
