UPDATED: Firefighters are responding to a fire at a block of flats in Ventnor this afternoon (Tuesday).
Appliances from Shanklin and Ventnor are already on scene on the main road into the town and 2 appliances from Ryde are still en-route.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus have entered the property, where smoke is issuing from a kitchen.
The call came in at 15:20.
UPDATE @ 15:50 – 3 appliances are now on scene – all other resources have been stood down.
High Street leading to Trinity Road has been closed in both directions, which will affect local traffic including buses.
UPDATE @ 16:01 – It has been comfirmed to Island Echo that the fire has broke out in the kitchen of an unattended ground floor flat.
2 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have used a hose reel to swiftly extinguish the flames, which were prevented from spreading to the rest of the property as the kitchen door was shut.
Tim Spencer-Peet of the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has taken this opportunity to remind Island residents about the importance of working smoke alarms and keeping doors shut within the home.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have responded to the incident but have been quickly stood down as thankfully they are not required.
Positive Pressure Ventilation is now being used to clear smoke from the building.
UPDATE – The fire has been fully extinguished and crews have now left the scene.
