Police have cordoned off the main Sandown to Shanklin road and are conducting a crash investigation following a serious road traffic collision during the early hours of this morning (Saturday).
A male motorcyclist has been rushed to hospital in a serious and potentially life-threatening condition as a result of a crash on the A3055 Sandown Road at the junction with Cemetery Road.
At some time before 03:00, emergency services were called to the scene of the incident where they found a Dominos delivery bike in the middle of the carriageway and the rider in a bad way. It’s thought the motorcyclist collided with a wall.
It is not known at this stage – until Police issue a statement – if any other vehicles have been involved in this morning’s incident.
Hampshire Constabulary’s mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit have arrived in Shanklin to conduct a thorough forensic investigation of the crash site. The road is expected to remain closed throughout this morning.
Coastguard Rescue helicopter 175 has been deployed to St Mary’s Hospital and is expected to airlift the casualty to Southampton General Hospital.
Next of kin have been informed.
Sandown Road has been placed under a hard road closure closed from Lake High Street to past Skew Bridge. Cemetery Road has also been closed at the junction with Green Lane.
Southern Vectis say all Route 2 and 3 buses will divert from Lake along Newport Road, Whitecross Lane, Landguard Manor Road and into Shanklin Co-Op.
UPDATE @ 08:15 – Sandown Road has now been re-opened by Police and as a result Southern Vectis buses are returning to normal line of route.
Hampshire Constabulary are expected to release further information in due course.
UPDATE @ 12:30 – Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward. They have confirmed that a 27-year-old man is in a life threatening condition in hospital…

those Domino Pizza riders are an accident waiting to happen! Always overtakin traffic and riding up your arse. Not surprised one bit.
What does that mean.. In relation to the accident. We’re the overtaking at 3am to deliver a pizza??
My thoughts are with all who are close to this cyclist, lets hope he pulls through, maybe this will be a wake-up call to all other cycle riders to take care when on the road
