The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been mobilised to a large caravan fire in Lake this evening (Friday).
Firefighters were called to the scene near to Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club at around 19:45 as black smoke started billowing into the sky, as captured on camera by an Island Echo reader (video below).
3 fire appliances from Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde are currently tackling the blaze on a bridleway off Golf Links Road.
Police officers are also on scene conducting initial investigations into the fire, which is believed to be potentially suspicious.
There is an exclusion zone in place due to the risk of gas cylinders being present.
UPDATE @ 21:45 – It has been confirmed to Island Echo that the blaze has completely destroyed 2 caravans at a community garden.
Fire crews have used hose reels to extinguish the fire and dampen down the area, with breathing apparatus used in the interests of safety.
Water has been pulled from a nearby reservoir due to the remote location.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service would like to thank the members of the public who called the incident in to the control room on 999.
The incident is now drawing to a close with appliances making up in preparation to return to station.
